Sadly, as of the new Sky EPG version download this morning, the
"Press RED and then quickly press Back-up" trick no longer stops the
RED DOT from loading.

I suggest that anyone affected should write to Ofcom complaining about
this and in the meantime should equip themselves with one of these:

Can we send Sky the bill for these add-on products? g

These devices send a 'Back Up' signal to the box right, so what happens if
you're reading through the EPG, or ordering a PPV or something when the
signal is sent. Will that not mess up whatever you're doing?

With the simplest one it does indeed just sends a backup signal every 30 seconds
which could bugger up use of EPG etc. In the more sophisticated one that I have
there is an IR sensor that if it sees that you have just used the remote then
holds off sending the backup command for another 30 seconds.

Which device is it that you use then that does this and where can you find
these online?

Cheers!

Yes. That's why they're not a solution.

And more recently Sky have stopped using it as a permanent fixture onscreen,
but still allow it in the 'background' so it can be accessed if you want it
and they'll tell you about it BETWEEN the programmes or during their trailers.
So, that option is acceptable because it doesn't happen during the shows.

Also, E4 and C4 don't use it as often as they used to, but C4 dropped it on
things like Hollyoaks but brought it back, so I stopped watching that crap.

@mrtickle.demon.co.uk says...
but if you use another remote WHILE it's changing channels and at the
same time you're watching a recording of something else already, then you
won't get your programme.

Er but if you manage to use another remote during the exact same 3
seconds or so while TiVo is changing channels, it could mess it up
regardless. That's not relevant to whether you have an extra red-dot
remover!

Which is why I can check myself if I'm doing it manually, but a constant
source of 30-second 'backup' signals feels a little out of my own control.

Also, when it comes to important recordings for shows such as those I'll want
to keep, I'll manually change the channel on the Sky remote not long before
the programme starts, so whatever happens it's still on the right channel.

If an episode of a soap gets cocked up then it's not life-threatening, but if
it's something I want to keep and it only gets shown once only then I've got
to make sure I get it the first time.

Jomtien penned this response in uk.media.tv.misc to a possibly
pointless meandering on Thu, 04 Mar 2004 07:05:19 GMT:

Only Paces have the new software at the moment.

Nice. Not true. Our Grundig has had it for about a week IIRC.
