They'll probably change it the same day everybody stops talking about
"filming" things with electronic cameras.

My nightly enquiry as Hil looks at the programme guide: "Is there
anything worth taping?"

I remind the grandchildren to "Pull the chain" even though both loos
flush with a push button. They understand, and have never questioned
it.

An interesting example of that is the term "detector" to refer to an AM
radio demodulator, presumably as the device is identical to the one used
to replace the coherer detectors used for early CW (Morse) receivers -
where you just had to "detect" the presence of a signal.

It's just chance that a semiconductor/headphone combination works just
as well to demodulate AM.

Apparently the first experimental AM transmissions were received by
surprised crystal set owners who were expecting Morse code from ship to
shore transmissions.

They heard a woman warbling away instead.

The transmitter used a high frequency AC generator (for ultra long wave)
which was fed through a carbon granule microphone. The woman risked
burning her lips on it despite water cooling.

"Sidetone" has a more more meaning in the context of telegraphy.

"Tonic-train" is an expression that occurs in early wireless
documentation. Your AC generaror's output would be interuppted by a
mechanical switch to impart a musical tone to it.
