Default DVR - landline needed?

Ok, another dumb question... do you need to have a landline to use a
DVR or is there a workaround? I'm completely wireless. TIA -

Which DVR?

Oh man, I don't even know yet. I have DishTV and was waiting for just
their basic DVR (whichever one it will be) to go on one of the $99
promotion type things again and when I asked a DishTV rep about it the
other day he told me he didn't know about when that promotion would be
coming up again and that I would need a landline to use it. I take it
from your response that some Dish DVR's require a landline and some
don't? I'm definitely not interested in going with DVR if it's going
to cost some serious dough though. Thanks :-)

For the Tivo based DirecTV DVR,you need a phone line for set up, but
can continue using it without.

Thx, Gary. Could I do set up at a family member's residence then
bring the DVR to my wireless household and be ok after that? I
appreciate your feedback. I assume the DVR you are referring to is
the "basic" DVR Dish would include in their upgrade offers to existing
customers? Thx again -

I have no idea about Dish, just about DirecTV Tivos, and Tivo branded
DVRs in general.

It depends some on the DISH DVR you get. Their 522 model that has two
tuners to feed two independent TVs will avoid a $5/month fee when
connected to a land line. None of the DISH DVRs actually requires a
land line. You do need one to order PPV via the remote but you can take
the receiver to a land line and make the call home when you exceed a $
limit (or two months). DISH T&C state they reserve the right to require
a phone line but it isn't enforced. There are exceptions when you have
more than 4 receivers on an account, ... but generally speaking, you
don't need a land line for setup or continued use with a DISH DVR.

Thank you, Bill. So I guess the "video on demand" thing is
independent of a landline also?

Video On Demand fee is also referred to as "because we can" fee. It is
collected on a 510, land line or not. If you could get a 501/508, you
wouldn't have to pay the VOD but you'd get less disk space (40/80/120MB
for 501/508/510) as well as not having to pay the $5/month "rent" (extra
receiver would still apply). The 510 (no 501/508) is available through
DISH to existing customers. You can PURCHASE a refurb 508 for $250 w/
shipping through the internet and save $10/month over the 510 "rent".
There are probably better prices, but I'd stay AWAY from a receiver
purchase on eBay.
