With another highlight from the article being:

|| Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. NCP.AX owns a controlling stake in both
|| NDS and DirecTV.

That's gotta help get them in the door

Well, it isn't a done deal, but you do have to think that NDS has the
inside track. I suppose they could support both TIVO and NDS. I wonder
what TIVO will do to fight off NDS?

TiVo already has a much larger feature set. They're already working
on a lower cost box for DirecTV, which will help them compete on
price. And I suppose they could renegotiate pricing if NDS lowballs
them.

They could also do something like TiVo Basic - so DTV could give users
TiVo Basic for free, and $5/month for TiVo Plus.

I mean, really, there is a lot they can do. If DirecTV was interested
they could produce receivers with integrated DVD players (and maybe
they will, if cable companies start offering Moxi units with DVD
players), and with a bit more work, DVD burners.

(More work because
the unit will have to convert DTV encoding to DVD encoding.)

I think it would be great if it just stayed in the "TY" format. Then
have it play back through the DirecTV as if were from the tuner. Or
as if it were coming off the hard drive of the DVR. Perhaps some
enterprising programmer(s) would even make a "TY" Editor that would
let you make archives of shows that are of the same quality as the
original satellite broadcast; with out commercials.

TiVo
already has the code for those features because they produced it for
Pioneer and Toshiba, and the forthcoming Humax box.
