Default hdtv from basic cable?

Hi,

I was advised by one sales person to try tuning my hdtv tuner to the basic
cable input (no STB). I have the internal hdtv tuner, but Comcast has
digital tv in my area, and apparently my tuner dentified all the channels,
which are almost all scrambled. I did get the music choice to come through,
and found the tennis network, but it takes way too long to go through all
the scrambled ones to work.

Is it possible to find the location of the hdtv channels, and are they
likely to be unscrambled since they are off air anyway?

I'll be shopping for an antenna in the meantime, but thanks for any help.

Greg

John,

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me how you found them?

These are the channels I get from Comcast basic cable in Baltimore

Maryland
using the integrated tuner in my RPTV.

85.02 Comcast SportsNet HD
86.01 ESPN HD
108.08 ABC HD
111.01 NBC HD

that's what I was afraid of....

I did the scan but it takes forever to go through and find the keepers. I
think I'll save my sanity and go buy the antenna. Thanks for the help.

The hard way.

I connected the cable coax from the wall to the input for my integrated
tuner and then had the TV do a channel scan. It took forever. When it
was done I went through each channel (most of the one it found didn't come
in... I'm assuming scrambled) and marked down the numbers/names of the
channels I did get. There were probably around 20 or so that my digital
tuner would pickup. The only HD ones were those I listed.

That's how I get most of my HD content as well. I really only use cable for
Comcast SportsNet HD and ESPN HD.

What model of TV do you have?

I thought sets with cable-compatible (meaning QAM instead of 8VSB)
tuners were still due in the future.

Nope, all the Mitsubishi RPTV's, platinum through diamond series have both
QAM and ATSC tuners, and so does the Hitachi XWX series.

There are also some new ones with ATSC tuners, such as the Sony WS550
series, Toshiba HX93 series, new Sony XBR950 LCD RPTV's, and some others I'm
sure I'm missing.

Mits WS-65869 (2002 model).

The integrated tuner does both 8VSB and 256QAM.

I have the Mitsubishi WS55511, diamond serise with HDTV tuner. It tunes in
the digital programs, most are scrambled. I have found NBC and ABC, plus a
few bonuses. I have successfully saved them all, but it's quite a job
deleting the hundreds of scrambled channels.
