Default Speakers to tv

I really don't know much about home theater systems. I have a 36" Panasonic
tv and the sound is not as great as I'd hoped. I was wondering if it is
possible to hook up surround sound speakers directly to the back of the tv. I
don't know anything about receivers and they seem really complicated so I
really don't want to get involved with them. I wouldn't even know where to
begin with it. any help appreciated.

Thanks

you can't hook up speakers directly to a TV, but you can hook up the audio
out from the TV to an amplifier, which will then power speakers.

Some tv's have surround speaker terminals on the back... Obviously not in
this case. You're best bet would be to send the audio output on the back of
the tv to a simple receiver... I think you will realize that they're really
not that complicated if you just play around with one sometime. Your only
other option would require taking the tv apart and soldering onto the
existing speaker terminal outputs and extending with speaker wire to larger
speakers.... considering your apparent lack of technical expertise I would
NOT recommend it.

The audio output from most TV's is strictly stereo, however it may have the old
matrix surround encoded.

You will have greatly improved sound by simply using two decent speakers and a
second hand stereo amp or receiver. If the TV has variable audio output you
will be able to use the TV remove to control volume, otherwise you will have to
control volume from the receiver. You will probably want to disable the TV
built in speakers, which is an option in the menu of many televisions. At
least keep the volume of the built in speakers much lower than the two good
speakers.

one last question. what kind of amp would I use? I might just end up getting
a simple receive.

Thanks

If you want inexpensive 2 channel stereo sound, look for a used receiver or
integrated amp. Garage sales and pawn shops are good sources. In my area,
PawnExchange allows 30 day return with no questions asked; make sure you ask
about return policy. Brands to look for are Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, NAD,
Marantz, Harman Kardon, Pioneer and Kenwood. New 5 channel receivers are
available for $150 and up at your local A/V store.
