I have a 1yr old KV-27FS100 Sony TV, and last night, it suddenly wouldn't
respond to the remote. I went up close to the unit do to a reset, and it worked, but not from anywhere else. I changed out the batteries with fresh ones, same deal. It was late, and I put of further diags until today. This morning, I went upstairs and got one of our universal remotes, programmed it for Sony, and it too only works if I get within 2 feet or less of the sensor on the TV. Any hope other than carrying this (heavy beast) in for service - not to mention paying for the labor, since the warranty is just 90d/1y/2y on this model? We've had many trouble-free Sony products, so perhaps we're due, but a failure out of the blue at 9 months isn't confidence inspiring. Thx, - Fred |

I have had similar issues with an old SABA (now Thompson) TV after the
remote has been dropped on the floor a few times. In that case it was an electrolytic capacitor inside the remote that had come loose. That capacitor apparently acts as a temporary current source during operation, and the batteries alone would not provide enough instant power. Resoldering the capacitor fixed it in my case. Thomas |

I've likewise fixed a remote and gotten it to work again. But the original post said they'd tried another remote and got the same symptoms. It sounds like either the IR pickup on the TV is dirty or it's worn out. Is the IR pickup on the TV in direct sunlight during the day? Is there anything else 'new' in the room that might be spewing out a lot of IR noise? Turn *everything* else in the room off (be sure) and try your remotes again. Or move the TV to a different room and try it (also making sure nothing else might be producing IR noise). If it fails in the other room then it sounds like the TV's ability to pickup IR signals is broken and needs repair. Along those lines I've removed IR sensors from TVs and replaced them but it's not a job for someone not used to mucking around with a soldering iron inside of high voltage devices. -Bill Kearney |
