Default Dish versus DTV programming changing policy

I posted a similiar question in the echostar newsgroup on my observation DTV
allows more program chances/ switching without the $5 penalty. I am with
Dish now, and I asked them if I decided to add, then drop the Superstation
lineup three months later would I get charged, they said yes...$5. But, my
three years with DTV I never was charged for switching stuff around as long
as I had Total Choice....is Dish just stricter with
this to save $$?? Anyways, I still prefer Dish depspite the $5 penalty as
the movie choices are better for the America 150 package. But, I hesitate to
add extras as Dish charges if I decide it is not what I want.

AFAIK, DirecTV has never charged for package downgrades.

Perhaps the $5 fee is accessed to pay for CSR support. With DirecTV
you can make changes to your package using the web interface with
no human involvement other than yourself.

When you use the DirecTV web interface to add or drop a premium movie package,
the change occurs as soon as you click the final accept button.

DirecTV charges $5 when PPV is ordered on the 1-800 number, while there is
no charge for ordering with the remote control. When using the web interface
to order PPV events, the event doesn't appear in the receiver's list of viewed PPV events.

Interesting, as I am looking at the Dish Network website, it says there is a
$5 fee for downgrades, but is waived if a subscriber is up for annual
renewal....see I take that to mean one has to be with Dish a year to get $5
fee waived.

No. It's kind of interesting. Dish considers changing service from annual
to monthly billing to be a "downgrade"/"sidegrade" in service. But they
will not charge a customer to change that. Within that particular window a
customer can drop a level in service and PROBABLY get the downgrade fee
waived (CSR Roulette).

The fee is there strictly to prevent customers from continually changing
their service only. Like getting HBO for the night and cancelling service
the next day and getting charged a net 0.50ΒΆ.

See ya

I was charged $5 when I downgraded a package (about a year ago). Upgrades
are free. (as of last month or so)

Nothing to complain about. When you downgrade a package, they lose revenue
and want to be paid for time used in "losing it". When you upgrade, they
gain revenue, so they absorb the cost of doing the upgrade. Someone still
has to answer the phone and punch the keys....and they like being paid, just
like everyone else.

I've never changed the service package from Total Choice, but I've added
and removed premium movie packages several times without a $5 change fee.
At the times I dropped HBO via telephone, there was no downgrade charge.

It seems that if you multiple receivers on your account, the web PPV order
does not work. At least, I get the message that I should call. I try to
use the web becuase I have an early DirecTivo that has a modem that does not
play well with my DSL (so I have to manually update every two weeks by
shutting down my DSL and making a daily call). So, if I want PPV, I try the
web and every time it fails. So, I head up to Blockbuster and rent the DVD
instead (DTV really needs more DD5.1 PPV selections).
