Thanks Chad Dunno, but if the idea is to save $$$, you're not going to save much. The lifetime subscriptions are the $$$, the broken TiVo hardware isn't worth much at all so you're still going to pay a couple hundred bucks if you do find one (I see them from time to time on ebay but you need to keep constant watch). |

The thought that occurs to me--I'm not the OP--that one might use the broken Tivo to get the service, but split the phone line so that the info goes to a working Tivo without a subscription, as well as the broken one. If the signal is connected to a one-way buffer, then only the broken Tivo will respond, but the new one will receive everything. Norm Strong |

Interesting thought and I do not know a lot about Tivo's but if my
assumption is correct that they work like PC's, then only one of the two units modems can be on that connection (the other one will see the line as being busy and not try to connect). But then again, I might not know what I'm talking about. "normanstrong" wrote in message news:[email protected]_s53... Yup, that's what I figured, but thought I might ask.

The thought that occurs to me--I'm not the OP--that one might use the

If the signal is connected to a one-way buffer, then only the broken Tivo will respond, but the new one will receive everything. I don't think splitting the phone line will work with modems, as modems need to negotiate things like speed and line characteristics. Also there's the issue of which modem the "wiretapper" modem is supposed to listen to. Splitting the *SERIAL* line (may take some effort with internal modems) won't work either. TCP/IP just doesn't do 3-way conversations, and especially not when none of the parties are expecting it to be a 3-way conversation. Things like the TCP sequence number and port number on the TiVo end will almost certainly be different. And there's the issue of what happens when the "wiretap" TiVo gets the answer before it asks the question ... Oh, yes, some of the conversation may be based on the TiVo service number, which is different between the two TiVos. Yes, you can get data sent over the line, but it doesn't come in a form you can just play back into a TiVo and make it accept it. for each TiVo. Gordon L. Burditt |

There has to be a full-fledged handshake between the PPP client (your TiVo) and the PPP server (at TiVo) before any data is useable. -Joe |

Well, I lucked out. I bought a busted Tivo on eBay (the description made it pretty clear to me that it was simply a hosed hard drive, and I already had a hard drive to replace it with anyway), intending on using it subscriptionless (for any new readers -- this obviously means it was a series 1, and I would have put up with a lot of nag screens). It ended up having a lifetime subscription. So I got a lifetime subscription Tivo for about $80 for the unit including shipping. I had to buy a power cord and eventually bought a 2nd remote (more because my first tivo's remote works sporadically), and already had the hard drive. It was still a great deal. |
