I've had my TiVo for two days now and I really like it. Surfing the
program guide is addicting. One observation. Too bad that putting the TiVo in STANDBY mode requires navigating the menu system. Not a hardship by any means, but the manual says some remotes have a STANDBY button, but maybe that was on earlier units. Progress I suppose. One question. I've heard talk that the hard drive is always spinning, but even in STANDBY? I can hear the drive clicking some even after hours in STANDBY, and this is not at the time of the unit calling home. Aside from that, the machine operates exactly as it does in non-standby. It definitely does *not* put the machine in any sort of standby or "spun-down" state. -- Rich Carreiro |

There's a discrete remote code for Standby that you can use for a programmable remote such as Pronto or Home Theater Master. It works fine, except it's a toggle -- there's only one code, no "standby on," "standby off." I've heard talk that the hard drive is always spinning, but even in STANDBY? I can hear the drive clicking some even after hours in STANDBY, and this is not at the time of the unit calling home. It's still going to record your TODO list and suggestions (if you have them enabled) plus process new guide data and scheduled activities like phone calls and database maintenance. My question is whether the "standby" mode to which you refer is the same as "sleep" mode on my Pioneer DVR-H810 system? I cannot figure the purpose of "sleep" as TiVo seems to behave no differently from usual. Does the hard drive power down in "sleep" mode to, perhaps, extend its life expectancy??? Wanda |

buffer. Standby's only use is to pass through the RF signal so that you can watch-live-while-recording without a splitter, but only if you use RF. Because standby is basically useless, there's no reason to have a button for it on the remote. My reciever and amplifier are source-auto-sensing. The standby mode stops the audio & video out, thus allowing the receiver and amp to shut down. It would be REALLY nice to have this button on the remote. |

The unit is in standby mode when you turn it "off." It isn't truly off unless you pull the plug out of the wall. |

Yes, I don't care if the TiVo is "off", only that it lets my receiver and amp shut down, those are the big power consumers. To do that I have to turn the video & audio outputs off. Hitting "StandBy" accomplishes that. I could automate that if they had a button on the remote for it. |
