Hi there !! my new (to me) Tivo purchased on e-bay model HDR212 will not
change the channels on live TV, apparently this unit had a subscription that expired, and when I go into the setup, and clear all channels , it does a search? and comes up with the same channel listing as before. The station letters do not match my local station call letters and am missing some channels, I think it is the old program information. When I select a channel, it shows channel 2, when I press channel up, it shows that is tuned to a different channel, I receive the notice about the expired subscription and the Tivo remains at channel 2. I was going through the menu and saw several reset options, and was wondering if I should reset the box. I was under the impression that my Tivo was a series 1 and as such the tuner would work without a subscription. Any help would be appreciated, and sorry if this question was posted before. Arnold |

Possibly. Possibly not. Basically, there's no reason to expect any TiVo device, Series 1 or not, to work without a subscription. I don't recall it ever being marketed as "no subscription required!". The ad I purchased mine from stated that exactly. The box says something like Subscription required for extented functions. -- Abit KT7-Raid (KT133) Tbred B core CPU @2400MHz (24x100FSB) http://mysite.verizon.net/res0exft/cpu.htm |

Your first step is to run guided setup. From What I read in the manual, the guided setup requires 2 phone calls to complete, and I want to operate it without subscribing. Arnold |

Doesn't matter - until you do Guided Setup it isn't going to work correctly for your channel lineup. Your first step is to run guided setup.
From What I read in the manual, the guided setup requires 2 phone calls to complete, and I want to operate it without subscribing. Then make the phone calls, without subscribing. They are data calls and you don't have to enter a credit card number. It still sets up the TiVo (series 1 standalone) without a subscription. You can't use functions that need guide data to function. You CAN do record by time-and-channel. TiVo apparently lets people get an initial shot of guide data to let them have a taste of what a subscription can do. Mine was refurbished, so I didn't get that, as the trial period had already expired years ago. Are there any Series 1 TiVos that are still unused that get the trial period? My Series 1 worked (with limited function, but it still worked) like this for several weeks before I decided to subscribe. Incidentally, the only way to set the clock is to make a phone call (or hack in telnet access) but TiVo seems to allow this even if you DON'T have a subscription. Incidentally, it turns out that the modem on my TiVo can't hold a connection long enough to get a full load of guide data. A dozen calls failed. It works great for SHORT calls (e.g. under 10 minutes, so a daily call usually works if one was made the previous day). I suspect that if I could tell it not to even attempt using speeds over 28.8k, it might work better - calls to my ISP had the same problem before I got DSL. TivoNet over the DSL works much better.
