You give your wife a lot of credit there, eh?

Gold Star items are awfully attractive, at times...

and it wasn't addressed to her.

That would hardly matter if your name is on the account.

Nope, she just watches for Free weekends. Free Starz this weekend!
She wouldnt watch a showcase, it'd take from her Law & Order or CSI
watching time. Before Tivo it was Columbo, before that Banachek.

You don't seem to be the type to ever request information
from a TiVo gold-star menu entry, so perhaps you were not
aware that you usually don't have to actually watch one to
get literature mailed to you; one of the entries after entering
the gold-star submenu is to request information -- not for
viewing anything at all but a text screen.

That's always a good possibility, but the text of this particular letter
did say "Thank you for _watching_..." (emphasis mine).

Sure, but that's just a mail-merged form letter, perhaps
one that was carelessly written. But, if he says there is no
possibility that what I described happened, so be it.

But they were wrong about that, so why is this a "they sold my viewing
habits" privacy issue? They obviously didn't sell a correct list of your
viewing habits.

Lenroc shaped the electrons to say:

Standard language - I believe it'll say that even if you didn't watch
it and just requested the info. They just presume you watched it if
you bother requesting info.

I usually request the info - if nothing else it'll cost the advertiser
money to mail me, and make them think the TiVo campaign is worth money
and maybe TiVo gets more ad sales. ;-)

Did you opt out of third party offering notifications
as detailed in section IV of the DirecTV privacy policy?

http://www.directv.com/learn/pdf/dtv...policy_eng.pdf

If you asked to be placed on the "do not contact" list,
your name and address may have been released before
you opted out. As with most other companies you do business
with, you must take action to keep your name and address
from being shared with 3rd parties.

Yes. I have been with DirecTv for 7 years. Opted out on day 1.

I don't think an "opt out" option was available 7 years ago.
I've been receiving letters from credit card companies offering
"opt out" options for fewer than 7 years.

In any case, you should contact DirecTV at 1-800-531-5000 and
confirm your opt-out status for the "do not contact" list.

I don't see the hangup on that. It shouldn't imply that anyone thought he
actually watched it, anymore than "thanks for voting for me" should imply to
anyone, to include the politician saying it, that he actually got any
particular person's vote!
