I been looking at Klipsh and JBL speakers at Best buy and need help.
I don't understand Freq. Response. What is ideal? I also went to Paradigm web site and their Freq. Responses don't go as low as these do, Is this good or Bad? Also do you suggest other setups? Not to exceed $2,000 Note:12inch subs may be too much for my home might stay at 10inch. Klipsh High: Front Left & Right SF-2 freq. Response 35Hz-20kHz $650 Center SC-1 freq. Response 60Hz-20kHz $280 Rear Left & Right SS-5 freq. Response 70Hz-20kHz $280 Sub woofer KSW-12 440 Watts 12 inch $500 Total $1,710 Klipsh Low: Front Left & Right SF-1 freq. Response 40Hz-20kHz $500 Center SC.5 freq. Response 70Hz-20kHz $180 Rear Left & Right SS-5 freq. Response 70Hz-20kHz $280 Sub woofer KSW-10 225 Watts 10 inch $400 Total $1,360 JBL High: Front Left & Right E-80 freq. Response 38Hz-20kHz $600 Center EC-35 freq. Responses don't go as low as these do, Is this good or Bad? The thing you have to remember is how the speakers are rated. Without a +/- spec, it's useless. The others could be rated with a +/- 6db rating, meaning that the given frequency response could vary as much as 6 db in either direction. No spec is given, so you can bet it's a pretty high number. On the other hand, Paradigm speakers are rated at +/- 2 db, meaning a better frequency response with no peaks or valleys, and a more accurate and pleasing sound. Plus Paradigm would be quite a few steps up from Best Buy speakers. Response 70Hz-20kHz $280 Sub woofer KSW-12 440 Watts 12 inch $500 Total $1,710 You can stop right there. For that much money, you can get Paradigm Studio Reference speakers which will expose those Best Buy speakers for the low cost, mass produced junk they are. |

SNIP Edward I would suggest looking at the Athena Technologies speakers at Best Buy - they are IMO the best ones there. Dennis |

OK I have owned nothing but Klipsch Speakers since 1980. I currently own a set that was bought from an Audio/Video store (Sound Advice) in 1997. So, now that Best Buy is now selling Klipsch, and the Audio/Video store where I bought my Klipsch in 97 is STILL selling Klipsch, why would you tell someone that buying them from Best Buy is a mistake? You say it's ok to buy "electronics" but not speakers, why is that? What makes buying a Yamaha reciever or a Mits.TV from Best Buy, any different than buying a set of Klipsch speakers at Best Buy? |

The problem is that Best Buy is only selling selected speakers from the "S" series. For home theatre, it is the "R" Reference Series speakers that you want. Another issue with Klipsch is that the surrounds are only sold in pairs, but you need 3 for a 6.1 system. I ended up using a center speaker for the back channel. -john- -- ================================================== ================== John A. I have read alot of reviews and posts on here about paradigm speakers so
I went out to the local dealer. I was blown away by there sound. I got the titans for my surrounds and paid 200. I don't think for the same money you can beat them and will be the brand I look at when I buy in the future. Do yourself a favor and go listen to paradigm before you actually buy anything. Joe |

Electronics you can get there if you wish. Well, there is one speaker line that Best Buy carries that is worth serious consideration - Athena Technologies. Granted, Best Buy has a horrible environment for trying to listen to them, but these are nice speakers - from the API speaker family (one of Canada's great speaker manufacturers - the sister companies are Energy and Mirage). Dennis If you want to hear good speakers, visit an audio/video shop that specializes in quality sound. You can find much better sounding speakers for the same price. I don't understand Freq. Response. What is ideal? Ideal is 20-20,000Hz +/- 0.0 dB, but since that doesn't exist in the real world, it doesn't really matter. And frequency response doesn't tell you much about the quality of sound the speaker can reproduce - there's a lot more to accurate sound than just frequency response. You need to hear the speakers to realize how accurate they are at reproducing the correct timbre of various sounds. Any speaker can blurt out a sound, but whether or not it sounds true to the original source is another story. There is also the soundfield it produces - imaging and soundstaging are critical to good music reproduction. It also helps in a properly tuned surround sound system - the sounds are much fuller and more enveloping. I also went to Paradigm web site and their Freq. Responses don't go as low as these do, Is this good or Bad? It's good. In fact, similar Paradigm speakers not only go as low as the JBL or Klipsch speakers you'll find at Best Buy, they sound much better at those low frequencies, with a cleaner, tighter response. And that's just the bass response. ![]() Total $1,710 If you're willing to spend that much at Best Buy on speakers, shop around at some audio/video stores and see what you like there. Take a look (listen) at Paradigm, PSB, NHT, B&W, Def Tech, Mirage, Energy, and a host of other brands. You'll be glad you did. |

Oh, I didn't realize they were of any decent quality. I'll have to give them a listen...thanks for the heads-up. Yes, they are good - I was surprised when I heard that Best Buy would be selling them. It gives an option to buy there. I hope they sell well there and the sales reps steer people to audition them because the typical BB electronics shopper is blinded by brandnames they recognize only.
