Default DirectTV DVD DVR anytime soon?

We are thinking of moving from Comcast to DirectTV. We recently got a
Pioneer 57H unit, which I am less than elated with, due to poor digital
image quality anyway (I am still in 30 day period and can return it if I
decide to go that route).

Is there any word of a DVD version of the DirectTV TiVo anytime soon?
Given that the current unit is only $100, I would have no problem buying
it now and upgrading in a few months. Not sure I want to give up on DVD
capability entirely though...

There is a Pioneer standalone Tivo w/ DVD recorder already on the market,
and I think Toshiba has announced plans for one, too. Toshiba already has
one with a DVD player built in.

Yes, I know of those units. As my initial message said, I have one of
the Pioneer units and am not very happy with it.

I am now looking to switch from Comcast to DirectTV, so am looking for a
DirectTV TiVo to go with it. Would like an integrated DVD-R recorder
with it, but I guess I'll live without one if they are not on the
immediate horizon.

Woops.. Sorry, I didn't see that part in your original post.. Anyway, I
doubt we'll see a Directivo w/ DVD built in ANYTIME soon.. As much as
Directv dislikes showsharing, etc, it'll probably be a long time till we see
it.

It's difficult to predict at this time, but the odds don't favor a
DirecTV-integrated model with built-in DVD recorder. Frankly, I was
surprised to see the Pioneer SA models, but then I realized that since
they're just performing the same tasks any OTA DVD-recorder is performing,
it's not quite the same as taking an MPEG-2 bitstream from DirecTV and
converting it to a DVD-compatible MPEG-2 bitstream and winding up with a
near-perfect copy of the original DirecTV program.

You could always couple a separate DVD-recorder with a DirecTV-integrated
TiVo, for a lot less than the Pioneer SA TiVo/DVD-recorder cost you.
There'd be a slight loss in signal quality thanks to the
digital-to-analog-to-digital conversion process, but you should still wind
up with fairly high quality DVDs.
