Default Serial port on Motorola cable box

I have a Comcast Cable Motorola digital cable box with a serial (data)
port. Am trying to connect this port to a Pioneer DVR810H DVD recorder
with TIVO. The connection is used to enable the recorder to change
channels on the cable box. Although Comcast tells me that the serial
port "should" be active, it does not seem to be. Has anyone had
experience with this setup? As an alternative I am using an IR cable,
but it is a pest. Many thanks.

FWIW, I had called my cable company that uses the same cable box, and they
told me they didn't have to enable anything. The serial interface to the
box is active. I DID have to enable the serial interface in TiVo, rather
than IR as came as the default. Is your recorder setup to use the serial
interface? I'm just using a version 2 TiVo (by TiVo).

They have to upgrade the firmware on your box, not enable it. If all of the
boxes they own are already firmware upgraded, then they don't have to do
anything. "The cable box must be running firmware version 7.54 or later."

I have a Motorola box with Adelphia. I followed the steps to check the
firmware version. It's version 7.54, but I still don't have the serial
port working. Adelphia weekend customer support (not necessarily
authoritative) told me none of their boxes have active serial ports. I
don't want to believe them, but it's still not working.

Has anyone made the serial port on this cable box work?

I have Starpower (Washington DC area) and they have also told me the serial
port is not active (and I cannot make it work even with the most up to date
firmware for the Motorola box)
