Seen on the A381 from Kingsbridge to Totnes, between Chilley and Halwell..
It's the pylon-like object in the centre. You'll need to zoom in to get a closer view: Satellite view he There seems to be an aerial to the right of it. Is the "pylon" also an aerial? If so, any idea what it might be for? -- Jeff |

Getting nothing here apart from a blank black screen on Street View. However, the satellite view just about gives the game away. The dark grey rectangle in the middle looks very like the roof of an underground water storage tank, with air vents. The larger of the two towers looks like a pumping derrick to draw water up from below ground (query: where's the head stock? Possibly wind driven, now removed and replaced with electric pumps.). The smaller mast would be an aerial for a) transmitting data to a control centre, and b) issuing radio instructions to the tank to pump water into or out of an adjacent water main. Not sure about the lighter grey rectangle with a corner missing, but it is possibly another underground tank. |

Thanks for the replies. It's interesting that according to the link in Graham's post that it was part of the early West TV system. It also seems that jbm was correct in mentioning that it was above a water storage tank, as Graham's link further points to http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2341190, which is of "Stanborough reservoir and masts". It appears that the only parabolic reflectors left at the time that photo was taken in 2011 are way down near the bottom, and are pretty small compared with earlier photos of a "fully-loaded" mast. There are some whips and dipoles further up, too, so maybe it is still functioning. -- Jeff |

I suspect that's due to the good and great at English Heritage being of a certain age[1], with memories of when the PO Tower was a symbol of London and featured on postcards alongside Carnaby Street. I don't see it featuring the same way these days - let alone tourists flocking to the tower to see, umm, a tall, thin concrete column. But BT (meaning their customers and shareholders) are stuck with the costs of maintaining a white elephant[2]. /rant Anyhow, AIUI they were allowed to remove the dishes because they were unsafe and replacement would have been exorbitantly expensive, even by the standards of those who take the view "you don't own a listed building, you just pour money into it for a while" ![]() [1] full disclosu moi aussi ![]() [2] OK, it is still used, but mostly for events in the restaurant and telecom links that could be moved elsewhere. -- Robin reply-to address is (intended to be) valid |
