Default OT? What is this object?

Seen on the A381 from Kingsbridge to Totnes, between Chilley and Halwell..
It's the pylon-like object in the centre. You'll need to zoom in to get
a closer view:

Satellite view he

There seems to be an aerial to the right of it. Is the "pylon" also an
aerial? If so, any idea what it might be for?

It's nothing of interest.

There's a better view he

At the date of the photo, it doesn't look as though it's finished.

Yes, spot on. Formed part of the national BT microwave link network to
(& from) Plymouth, for BBC, ITV and C4, and also onward to/from Goonhilly.

Just like all its siblings all over the UK (and it's mother in London)
it's now largely obsolete thanks to fibre.

And the 'mothership' in London, aka The Post Office Tower has
moulted all the characteristic microwave horns, despite being in
a conservation area.

Oh much worse than that, it's a *listed* building.

I suspect that's due to the good and great at English Heritage being of
a certain age[1], with memories of when the PO Tower was a symbol of
London and featured on postcards alongside Carnaby Street. I don't see
it featuring the same way these days - let alone tourists flocking to
the tower to see, umm, a tall, thin concrete column. But BT (meaning
their customers and shareholders) are stuck with the costs of
maintaining a white elephant[2].

/rant

Anyhow, AIUI they were allowed to remove the dishes because they were
unsafe and replacement would have been exorbitantly expensive, even by
the standards of those who take the view "you don't own a listed
building, you just pour money into it for a while"

[1] full disclosu moi aussi

[2] OK, it is still used, but mostly for events in the restaurant and
telecom links that could be moved elsewhere.
