VLANs? Yes. So it should be do-able on a single cable? Actually, thinking about it, when I said "Yes", that should have been "Not yet". I was forgetting that I plan to use VLANs only to seperate staff and general public access via the public access points, but had some trouble the first time I tried to set this up, and had to abandon the idea. It has turned out that my problems were caused by some ambiguities in the router manual, which I've now resolved by contacting the manufacturer's support line, and hopefully I'll be implementing this on my next visit. At the moment, the office/reception, bar, and public WiFi are on separate physical LAN subnets. |

However, one already comes out of the router via a switch, and another, possibly two by now, already end(s) in a switch. Nevertheless I'd be advising my client to buy three or four switches as lightning fail points - I just know he won't buy it/them, literally. |

Also, managed switches are considerably more expensive. |

The customer is typical of many small businesses - no concept of getting expert advice to make the best use of available technology, even though the initial costs might appear to be a little higher. Sadly Java Jive has posted here about more than one such business - he seems to attract them! -- Graham J |

I give them professional advice at a good price, and they can either take it or leave it, as long as they pay me what I ask for my time, and don't try to blame me for a failure that was a consequence of not following my advice, I'm not too fussed. Mostly, though, they do take my advice, just not always straight away! |
