Default 5.1 To 6.1 - A Big Deal?

I currently have a 5.1 set-up -
is there a big difference in
sound if I were to go 6.1?

It seems that most DVD's
are 5.1 - is 6.1 worth it
at this point in time?

I think the issue of newer technology makes the difference.....Prologic
2....DTS 6.1 and its Neo decoders.....myself I found 6.1 fills a gap in the
back surround I really hadnt noticed until I got a Yamaha reciever that had
6.1......there are slowly new DVD's especially DTS ones that you hear a
differance.....

Depends on the room, and the type of speakers. In a smallish room, using
dipoles or other wide-dispersion speakers set up for a diffused surround
field, I don't think you'll get a lot of benefit. Of course, really discrete
audio mixes like some multichannel DVD-A or SACD recordings won't sound very
good on such a setup.

In a bigger room, especially one with more directional speakers in back,
filling in the surround field with that 6th speaker can make a very
noticeable difference.

The difference is nothing compared from going from stereo to 5.1, but
it's noticable.

Most recievers can generate the rear channels from any DVD, they don't
have to be specifically encoded for 5.1EX.

Better yet, what do you feel you are missing from 5.1 that you are thinking
6.1 will solve? Usually there is something behind the question.

If your looking to spend money for a little better sound, look for better
speakers, better positioning and better theater calibration as just going
from 5.1 to 6.1 doesn't necessarily fix anything that is lacking unless your
room is so large that you need the volume.

I would Bag 6.1 and go with a 7.1 setup... if you use a 7.1 setup for 6.1,
you will get the sound from the sixth speaker on a 6.1 setup through
speakers 6 and 7 (rear speakers) on a 7.1 set up, and when you listen to a
5.1 (majority of what is out there) you will get the rear left signal
playing through your left side and left rear speaker, and the right side and
right rear will get the 5.1s right rear signal. Works the best in my
opinion.
