Default Why does initial guided setup require a landline?

I dumped my landline two months ago. Unfortunately, it seems that the
first time any Tivo goes through guided setup, you have to have a
landline. Why is this?

Less than an hour before you posted this, MegaZone posted a followup to a
thread titled "TiVo Phone Line Unnecessary?" explaning how to get around
this.........

If, OTOH, you actually want to know _why_, and not just how to get around
it, then you've surely got me stumped.

Maybe it's a shady deal with the Telco monopolies?

Seriously though... I know one bad reason, but that's it: They don't have
to.

It says on the box that you need a phone line, so if it would take blank
amount of time/money to build in the networking stuff before guided setup,
with the added cost of a more complicated guided setup (even if by only
one screen), then why should they do it? You already _need_ a phoneline
(according to the box)...

As mentioned though, this is a _bad_ reason, and one I certainly hope
noone at TiVo would give as the real one

Once E-911 Phase II is completely rolled out (where if I dial 911 from my
cellphone, the 911 operator will know my position within 50-100 meters)
I'll agree.

Until then, I'll keep my landline around, thanks

But, I do agree that TiVo should be able to do guided setup over the 'net,
just like it can do it's daily 'call'...

Not a chance, cellphone BW is too expensive and not reliable enough to
make the previous technology obsolete. Online gaming could not use a
cellphone to connect, thats just one application.

911 would know where you are in a remote car accident if you had a
landline back home?

Depends on your needs, for normal talk, true, for data transfer no.

and not reliable enough to
make the previous technology obsolete.

It will be.

WILL BE means its not obsolete.

Online gaming could not use a
cellphone to connect, thats just one application.

Online gaming can use broadband (i.e. cable modem) access. Which has
already made dial-up connections obsolete.

Broadband is not widely available, in fact in most locales it is NOT
available, so as I said, it will be quite some time before landlines
become obsolete.

What are you talking about? If you dial 911 from your home phone they
know where the call came from, IE if you DID NOT have a landline and
called from your home via cellphone they would know where you are.
