I just signed the petition "Allow the York Minster bell ringers to
ring!" and wonder if you could add your name too.

The more support we can get the better chance we have of succeeding. You
can read more and sign the petition he

Done! It's a long way from here, but I visit York, its Minster, and
Yorkshire quite frequently.

Archbishop!

Archbishops and Bishops have no formal role in the running of the
cathedrals and can't rid York of its turbulent priest.

The cathedral's chapter is the governing body (c.f. board of directors).
It's chaired by the dean who is appointed by the Crown.

The 'bish has to consent to cathedral legislation which is dealt with by
a separate body. But the chapter is the sole executive body.

Having lived in another cathedral city, and very much within earshot of
the bells, I would not want them stopped, but some days they went on and
on and on... Extremely tedious and annoying after an hour or more.

Wouldn't be so bad if they rang out a tune of some sort...
