Why isn't there a BBC TV channel devoted to classical music?

for the same reason there isn't a BBC channel devoted to pop music

this is too narrow a segment for a public service broadcaster to
enter and is left up to commercial operators to fill

You need to ask why there isn't a commercial operator providing such
a service (but I suspect we all know the answer)

Just think, we would now have a radio channel dedicated to the music
of films and shows but for the fact that the proposers went bust and
we got Classic FM instead - thankfully!

Could be a mentality issue. 25 years ago, during the first gulf war,
Americans withdrew from travelling abroad. BA, desperate to at least cover
their costs offered really cheap trips to New York, which my wife sensibly
took up. Overall it was a terrific week.

I wanted to buy some classical records (they were mostly CDs by this time).
We found a large record store on 5th Avenue. Search though I did I could not
find a single classical record. Eventually I asked one of the female staff
to help. Looking at me as though I was barmy, she pointed and said over
there.

At 'over there' I found what she considered classical - Frank Sinatra.

On the other tack, I like dynamic music from a visual perspective. There is
an enormous amount on Youtube.

I agree, mostly. But, my wife from time to time subscribes to the
Internet channel of the Berlin Philharmonic, and we both enjoy watching
the players and the conductor while listening to the music. I wouldn't
want to do this all the time, but it makes a nice change occasionally.
They sometimes have a special offer of access to part of their archive
free of charge for a week at a time, for anyone who wants to try it out.

One thing this does demonstrate is how much better the camera work is
than one ever sees on the BBC TV programmes of classical music such as
from the Proms. They never have the unnecessary pans and zooms wild
camera swings that the BBC always indulge in, and concentrates for long
periods of time on showing the soloists or prominent groups while they
are playing. This makes it so much better.

I seem to recall that the viewing figures of proms and other televised
concerts was not that good.
Unless its opera or ballet, watching an orchestra playing is somewhat
pointless and can be mostly appreciated via radio.

Who remembers the old Mantovani shows. Pretty boring visuals, and when
James Last did shows he did them in some of the worlds beauty spots so gave
more interest to the public by the locations.

I do not see the Rayal Phil going around plying in Tralee or in the scotish
castles and highlands much.

Why isn't there a BBC TV channel devoted to classical music? After all,
those us who have the maturity of taste and intelligence to appreciate
classical music are in general the ones who are the most productive, and
thus generate the most wealth, so in effect we are giving the poor people
the money to buy their TV licences by the trickle down process. As it is
we are poorly served by the BBC, which seems to think that the lower
orders have to be amply supplied with idiotic dross as a priority and the
intelligentsia can go hang.

Not much help if you're deaf though. ;-)

Beethoven managed. He knew the score (having written it) and by
watching the performers playing he could tell whether or not they were
playing it the way he expected.

Not the BBC, but there is an excellent (subscription) channel:

I'm not sure she really *is* naked. When she stands up and walks off stage,
you can just about see reflections from the thin straps of a flesh-coloured
thong across her hips and buttocks.

BA have to compete with airlines like KLM who offered tickets at less than
cost price including free connecting flights in the USA and in Europe. I
wasn't surprised when KLM went bankrupt.

Years ago when I was representing my clients a the CAA, I deduced that the
name Freddie Laker would induce a purple complexion among the staff.

obvious answer, the bbc doesn't have any music channels.
they have radio ones however - what would be gained from matching
pictures to it?

And there used to be a radio channel dedicated to Jazz that didn't perform
very well, so they changed the format, and then sacked one of their
presenter for insisting on continuing to play jazz in his slot
