Default Upscaling

I've never thought much to the idea, but I must say my wife's new Humax
Freeview box really does make SD programmes look good. It was however
necessary to adjust the contrast and brightness on the telly.

Same here, the SD picture from my BT Youview(Humax) box is noticeably
superior to that from the tuner in the Panasonic TV, this is also true
for a Manhattan Freesat box.
Being a fan of the British Touring Car championship, I watch nearly all
the live broadcasts on SD ITV4.
Freesat ITV4 gives a slightly better/sharper/preferable (by me) picture
than Freeview; on this channel at least.

everything non hd is upscaled by a hd tv itself - no need for the
supplying box to do it.
otherwise the PAL resolution image would be in the centre of the screen
surrounded by nothingness.

My wife doesn't own a Humex outright. All her appliances are in the
kitchen. The electronic toys in the lounge are, at best "Chattels in
common".

It depends on which box has the better image processing engine - not all
are made equal. It may be better to bypass the up-scaling inbuilt to a
TV by providing a HD resolution input, albeit from a SD source. A better
picture may also be produced if over scanning on a TV is turned off.

Yes of course, but it seems that some upscaling is better than other
upscaling.

This one is hers so that when she's filled it with soaps it's her problem.

Why would anyone turn it on on an LCD or Plasma display? It's there to
allow for CRT geometry errors.

At times some channels have annoying black and white rectangles at the
top of the screen without it. For example, Dave Ja Vu has right now
(Dave doesn't).

Talking Pictures has these rectangles too.
