It was(is) available on iPlayer, just not on my smart TV

Try the search option on your smart TV.

Default What's the use of "catch up" on smart devices ...

I have a feeling that some of these devices were hastily modified a while
back when the bbc dropped some of their specialist listings they provided
and since that time strange things happen. For example, on my blind friendly
I player interface, some programs take up to three days to appear in the
list, whilst others seem to come in almost immediately. If you churn through
the tedious sifting on the bbcs site to find what you want, you will find
it there that same day. so my feeling is that somehow, the lists that some
devices show are taken from a different place to the ones which are seen
on the I player interface itself.
The BBC are also notoriously lax with radio podcasts as well, they suggest
they are there the next day, but ofen it takes several days before they pop
up on their own list, as if the person who did them had a holiday!
And while I'm about it...
Is it really beyond the whit of the broadcast industry to present their
catch up players in the same format so a common interface can find the Audio
described version and play it without seemingly endles sorting menus only to
find the AD versionw as not copied over at all?

... If they don't offer all of the programs available

Note that I'm not referring to them only offering a limited choice of
catch up services, I'm referring to them "cherry picking" the programs
that they offer from a service that they do provide.

I missed a prog that I wanted to record last week due to a clash and I
thought "now I have my smart box hooked up to my new wifi, I can see it
via catch up".

It was a mainstream program on the Beeb during primetime evening viewing
and the fecking program isn't offered

and this is supposed to be "the future" of TV!

what moron thought this up?

(FTAOD I checked up with iPlayer on my PC and it is available via that
route)

Then there is Ch 5 who once again this last week put out CSI Cyber
supposedly with AD and it was not.

If they had had a failure with sound or vision they would have fixed it or
put it out another time, but not eeven a sorry was given.
Stop box ticking and start pro viding a service or just don't bother.

What really gets me angry is when I've seen the first few episodes of a
show on catch up, then for some unknown reason the next episode isn't
available.

This happened with the Kennedys. Episode two wasn't on iplayer via v+ box.

A lot of the sport is now a minefield as often football clubs own the
rights.

Usually if a program is not available on iPlayer it's because the BBC
doesn't have the rights for distribution it in that manner.

Was it Match of the Day by any chance?

On one item on radio 4 a couple of years back only half of a program was put
up. I eventually got an email back saying that the Vangelis music used as a
bed in the missing piece was not licenced for the podcast as it would be up
longer than 30 days and I was advised to listen to the I player version not
the podcast!
I'mcoming back as a lawyer.

You'll usually not see movies, or sports coverage on iplayer, or any catch
up service. Rights for sports can be immensely complex, there are
even restrictions on how often and when clips can be shown during news
bulletins in the hours and days after an event.

It wouldn't have made any more sense if it had, so you haven't really
missed anything.

I decided to abandon this show after an episode that featured some
utter ******** about disabling a bomb by connecting its electronics in
some unconventional way to a car battery. It seemed to be something to
do with the low impedance of the battery, though as that was about the
limit of understanding of whoever wrote this tosh, further
enlightening detail was unforthcoming.

I didn't see any mention of episodes in the original post, did you?

That wasn't in the original post, which is what I replied to. It was
someone else's comment.

The paragraph above was my comment responding to Tim's original post.

Wednesday, BBC2 not a single program, after 16:45 is available

ITV, programs after 21:00 are never offered. I note that most days this
week there was football at 22:30, but not every day and FWIW the
football is available on ITVPlayer

(times given are start time of the last available prog)

Isn't iPlayer (the same version as seen on a web-browser) available
directly on a Smart TV?

It is here.
