If I buy a new TiVo, What store stands behind their extended warrantees
better... Best Buy, Circuit City... Or is it worth it to pay extra for the extended warranty? If I buy the lifetime service and my box gets replaced under a warranty, do I need to buy a new extended warranty? It seems like I should do the monthly fee instead of risking it. |

Buy the lowest hour model Tivo or ReplayTV you can, wait until the warranty is up (usually 90 days), and use the extra money to upgrade the hard drive yourself. If the unit works for the first 90 days, then your biggest problem area will be the hard drive --- if you upgrade it and it fails later you can send it back to the manufacturer for replacement and re-do the upgrade. In the long run, you'll save money and have a lot more recording capacity (yeah, I know, I thought 40 hours would be enough too --- but I now have 2 ReplayTVs with 320 hours and they are about 50% full at any one time). Extended warranties are usually a waste of money. If I buy the lifetime service and my box gets replaced under a warranty, do I need to buy a new extended warranty? It seems like I should do the monthly fee instead of risking it. If you have a unit replaced under warranty that has lifetime, Tivo & ReplayTV will transfer the lifetime to the new unit. |

They are all not worth what you pay for them. Especially for major appliances and home electronics. For items where the prices have come down consistently over recent years, it's never a good value to buy an extended warrenty. Even for items with fairly steady prices which are prone to failure, extended warrenties are usually a bad deal because of the hassle of actually getting service when you need it. Read the fine print and you'll find that they aren't as easy to deal with as the sales drones make them out ot be For a TiVo or whatever, take whatever you were willing to pay for those extended warrenties and put it in a separate savings account. Leave it there until you have a repair expense and chances are you'll have more than enough to cover the cost of repairs and probably enough to just buy a new one. |

Read the fine print and you'll find that they aren't as easy to deal with as the sales drones make them out ot be Extended "warranties" are not warranties. They are insurance. Plain and simple. The insurance sold at stores like Best Buy is very high margin insurance, to boot, which is why they push it. Insurance is generally never a good deal, unless you know you are at the far end of the bell curve when it comes to risk compared to all the other insured parties, and the insurance company doesn't. You buy insurance, knowing it's a bad deal, for your health or home or car because you know you can't afford to handle the cost if there is a catastrophe. You do not buy insurance for things that you can easily handle the cost of a problem with. Like consumer electronics. The only time I can imagine this making sense is if you know you will be very, very rough on the product, and that is covered. Like you know you will put it in an overheated cabinet, or mount it in an off-road vehicle or something like that. Even then the margins on this insurance are so high it might not be worth it. -- Spam was 25 years old in May of 2003 -- read more http://www.templetons.com/brad/spam/spam25.html |
