Yes. I had an old Hacker radio that fell dead. Not having the knowledge
nor time to try and fix it, I found somebody who specialises in
repairing Hacker and Roberts radios, and paid a total of £60 to get
it working again. I know I could buy a new one for less, but this has
sentimental value, and it just looks so good. I would happily do the
same again.
But when my Goodmans receiver, of about 1975 vintage, developed a loud
hum, I was able to repair it with much help from good folks on one of
these Newsgroups, replacing lots of old capacitors on the way.

Yes I remember so you did get it sorted in then end then so what was the
final answer just all the caps or a few or just the one?...

Well worth repairing, but a professional repair would be uneconomic.

Thanks for everyone's help on this. I'll be trying this morning to
get a gentleman of the old school, ie someone who knows what a
soldering iron is, to have a look at it. If he won't, I may be
forced to have a go myself, but it's not something I fancy. Where
have all the proper electronics guys gone?

Maybe now I know! According to the guy I saw, you now need a licence,
extractor fans, masks, goggles and protective underwear to be allowed to
solder anything commercially, though it's OK at home in private
apparently.

It's a strange world we live in. Anyway, he knows a guy who can, so
I've left it with him.

Just to follow up on this, the guy has replaced the capacitors, re-soldered one IC, and returned it with the problem resolved, all for the princely sum of £25. I'm well pleased.

Norman, I have exactly the same problem as you had with your SW1. Is "your guy" likely to be able to do another one - now that he knows exactly how to do it? I would appreciate any help. Thanks. Warren

I imagine he would, but sorry I don't actually know who did it. I took it to a computer shop who contracted it out. The shop was EDA Computers, South Road, Saffron Walden. If you can trace them online and give them a call, they're very helpful and will most likely point you in the right direction (towards Hertford if I recall). Best of luck!

This radio was far ahead of its time and no other radio came even close
to its miniaturisation and reception range - and they still don't. In
the end I decided to replace it with a Roberts Ecologic, as - for
better or worse - DAB seemed to be where things were going.
