Can't remember the figures, but weren't there significant numbers of spoiled ballot papers in the police commissioner elections? Assumed to express dissatisfaction in a way that failing to vote would not. The Sussex PCC seems to be intent on keeping her fizzog in the media as much as possible prattling on about number plates for bicycles whilst stealthily removing actual police officers from the streets (or at least not combating the decline). Bicycles should have number plates, as well as a bell, lights, and 3rd party insurance. Same with humans, dogs, cats, horses and children. |

Bicycles should have number plates, They already carry a "mark" in the form of a frame number. The practical difficulties of number plates (at least in the manner that they are fitted to motorbikes) have been discussed before. as well as a bell, Generally less effective than relying on the rider's voicebox. lights, Already invented but in many places not used when required. and 3rd party insurance. Maybe the same problem as road tax (discussions re proper title can go in their own thread) with the administrative costs being significant WRT the benefits but in many cases now included with house insurance or variations thereof. |

But frame numbers don't show up on CCTV when the cyclist goes through a red light. Neither would either a number plate fitted so as not to be a potential danger or, if fitted in the only practical position below the saddle, highly likely to be concealed by the rider's clothing. That assumes that the TLC would be activated by a pedal cycle anyway. |

The Sussex PCC seems to be intent on keeping her fizzog in the media as much as possible prattling on about number plates for bicycles whilst stealthily removing actual police officers from the streets (or at least not combating the decline). Bicycles should have number plates, They already carry a "mark" in the form of a frame number. The practical difficulties of number plates (at least in the manner that they are fitted to motorbikes) have been discussed before. The Swiss manage it. They might do but the examples that I can find seem to be no more readable on a moving vehicle than a tax disc used to be. as well as a bell, Generally less effective than relying on the rider's voicebox. Don't be silly. Of course it's not. Bells will often be drowned out by traffic noise anyway and the rider's reaction time also comes into it as well as ringing the bell becoming one more physical task to be performed in a very small time window. lights, Already invented but in many places not used when required. So? So why suggest it in the manner of something novel. and 3rd party insurance. Maybe the same problem as road tax (discussions re proper title can go in their own thread) with the administrative costs being significant WRT the benefits but in many cases now included with house insurance or variations thereof. What about anyone who doesn't own a house? They can still get the insurance if they need it or want it. |

No but maybe adult riders should be required to carry at least a very basic version of a driving licence which would do away with one of the reasons that some police forces (yes, I mean your lot Mr Hogan-Howe) can't be bothered to deal with errant cyclists. And what problem is all this solving? |

And what problem is all this solving? And again I ask - what problem is all this bureaucracy solving? Round my way it's a sore point. Katy Bourne prattling on about number plates for bikes whilst arseholes throwing rocks through cars windows and shops goes undetected. |
