practical difficulties of number plates (at least in the manner that
they are fitted to motorbikes) have been discussed before.

Neither would either a number plate fitted so as not to be a potential
danger or, if fitted in the only practical position below the saddle,
highly likely to be concealed by the rider's clothing. That assumes
that the TLC would be activated by a pedal cycle anyway.

The Swiss manage it.

They might do but the examples that I can find seem to be no more
readable on a moving vehicle than a tax disc used to be.

Don't be silly. Of course it's not.

Bells will often be drowned out by traffic noise anyway and the
rider's reaction time also comes into it as well as ringing the bell
becoming one more physical task to be performed in a very small time
window.

basic version of a driving licence which would do away with one of the
reasons that some police forces (yes, I mean your lot Mr Hogan-Howe)
can't be bothered to deal with errant cyclists.

Round my way it's a sore point. Katy Bourne prattling on about number
plates for bikes whilst arseholes throwing rocks through cars windows
and shops goes undetected.
