If that's BBC, you can use GetIPlayer, but it's a somewhat steep
learning curve ... Agreed. On my desktop running XP Audacity records anything and everything passing through the PC via the embedded sound processing. I too have a Dell laptop running W7 Pro 32bit (Dell badged) and Audacity won't work like this. I also have an HP Compaq also running W7 Ultimate which does allow recording in the same way as my desktop. To add to the survey, my Toshiba running Win7 64bit doesn't capture embedded sound either. m... In article: Davidm says... Anyone got any experience of doing this and can recommend some software? (Win7 compatible). I've been using Tapin radio for some time, it will record the stream a you wish to do. It has one of the best station lists going, browse-able by region, genre, and network etc, plus air and rail traffic control from all over the world, hours of fun. It's available from Raimersoft http://www.raimersoft.com/tapinradio.aspx The installer version will try to install adware but the portable version is free from such annoyances,I've just tested this with a fresh download and setup of it. Get the portable version from here http://www.raimersoft.com/downloads.aspx I would agree with that. I also use Rarmaradio from the same web site - interesting as it displays more transmission detail before the station is played which gives the option of choosing the HD (i.e. high data rate) stations. -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |

wrote: Next week 3 Counties Radio is doing an interview in which my son may be taking part. I'd like to find a way of recording this via the internet (3CR does broadcast via the internet). I'm not interested in recording copyright music, just this interview. I've done lots of googling, and quite a few programs around, but also lots of warnings about malware for many of them. Anyone got any experience of doing this and can recommend some software? (Win7 compatible). Thanks to all who replied. I've installed Audacity and by following their help guide got it working OK via the Windows WASAPI. Also via their guide magaged to get lame installed and working to save as MP3. I think I'll find lots more uses for Audacity as I find my way around it! |

Connect the sound output (headphone if no line output) to a *cassette recorder*. I was going to suggest, better yet, a decent R2R tape deck but... That is an option. I just connected it to the Line In of another computer. Probably just as good in this case, 64kbps stream, plug a USB audio dongle into the same PC and configure your recording software to use its line in to digitise the line out from the on-board sound adapter. In all cases, you'll need to suppress system sounds either in system sound settings or just by not running anything else that will result in any such bong/ping noises for the duration. I once captured 54 episodes from a 24 hour internet radio station that was cycling through Goon Show radio broadcasts (back in February 2005) by literally leaving the system alone for 25 hours or so by redirecting winAmp's output to a 16 bit stereo 44.1 ksps wav file which resulted in a monster 7GB file. The redirected output meant I wasn't able to listen to its progress. Anyhow, after splitting the file down to a couple of sub 4GB chunks (my sound editing software couldn't handle 4GB or larger files) using a file splitter app I'd had to subsequently search for and download when I discovered that particular snag, I was able to edit each episode into its own 16 bit mono track before using a CDDA to MP3 converter (AudiCatalyst, afaicr) to generate 64kbps mono MP3 files, a total of 662MB's worth, small enough to burn to a data CD with room to spare. Luckily, the file splitter had done a lossless cut so I was able to rejoin the two parts of the effected episode where the cut had taken place without the slightest of glitches on the resulting 16 bit stereo wav file. The 25 hours or so of 'silent running' had proved just sufficient enough to capture the whole cycle because I saw repeat episodes appear in the last half hour or so of the recording. It was all a bit of a faff but it was worth the trouble to capture so many episodes of this "BBC Classic" since shortly after this marathon recording session, the internet station disappeared, never, afaict, to reappear ever again. As far as the OP's requiremnet is concerned, redigitising the analogue output using this technique isn't going to reduce the audio quality by any detectable amount. It's a guaranteed, if rather pragmatic, method to defeat whatever DRM sillyness might be imposed on such a broadcast so well worth considering if the OP can't track down an app to do the job more directly. -- J B Good |
