Eg a gradual rundown of Freeview and switch to conditional access by
satellite+smart card or internet? (I've no idea how many Freesat
receivers provide for conditional access.)

Maybe you are right, but I think it's outrageous. Why did they
introduce Freeview, only to ditch it a couple of decades later? We
could have gone straight to satellite.

Except that the Ofcom report says the benefits of DTT will not be
compromised and there will be no significant disruption to viewers.
Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story!

Either you missed off the winking smiley, or you need an infusion of
cynicism.

I certainly missed the first element (maybe Agent to blame). I'm
generally quite cynical but we've just had a referendum here where
Alex Salmond felt it necessary to pledge that Eastenders and Strictly
would remain on TV so I'm guessing removing terrestrial TV would not
be a vote-winner.

COM 7 and 8 are only intended to be temporary services, to promote
DVB-T2 (have T2 receivers been flying off the shelves because of them ?)

I doubt it

The point is, without muxes 7 and 8 anyone with a new telly would be
constantly getting irritated by the constant mentions of HD on various
channels, knowing they couldn't get it even though the telly said HD on it
and they'd bought it on that basis. Because to the public Sky=satellite
and satellite=Sky

Then they should market freesat more aggressively

Who are "they"?

ISTM one of the problems with the Freesat model is that nobody has a
clear incentive to market it. The BBC doesn't even have the incentives
it had with DAB - eg not ending up damned for wasting vast sums. And
even the manfacturers mostly win either way between Freeview and
Freesat.

the people who think that they are losing customers to SKY because they
can't market" HD on freeview properly

Only seems to be Samsung making some TV sets with Freesat inside I'm not
noticing Freesat boxes for sale.
My present TV is a Panasonic with Freesat from 2008.
