This site may be of interest:

Have you any info as to the expected life of your solar panels and
inverter unit?
And how often do you have to clean the panels to maintain efficiency?

We just had free cavity wall insulation injected - a sort of inert fibre
called Supafil 40.
It looks like white candy floss! The freeholder arranged it under some
government scheme.

Why should it be of interest in a newsgroup pertaining to uk digital
TV?

Because if we are forced to rely too much on the wind, we'll know when
the times are when we won't be able to watch digital TV?

So what is the best exterior wall insulation for single layer walls I
wonder. I ask as I had a call the other day claiming that it was now
possible to insulate such walls.

Well, when you look at what else it discusses, one does not really get very
surprised!
Next week, Pig husbandry.

Brian,

I don't know the make and materials but examples of exterior insulation are
becoming more common. When I investigated this last (I have a double-brick,
solid walled 1923 semi), everyone I spoke to said 'external not internal'
all citing cold bridging as the problem with internal insulation. Even the
install instructions for the interior stuff have lots of gentle warnings
about this.

However a recent 'Grand Designs' also had an interesting material, a sort of
'hollow tile' that makes the house look like one of those houses where the
walls are tile-clad, but with insulation resulting from the hollowness. The
two problems seemed to be that it was a pig to lay for the bricklayers and
it make the walls even thicker, which would make the house stand out even
more if one half of a semi or mid-terrace.

I'd be interested if any other posters have actually used external cladding
because I really should do some insulating at some point.

There is a row of low level flats near where I live which have all had
external insulation added. Presumably the owners/landlords were eligible for
some kind of grant. I don't know what it was called - it looked like
expanded polystyrene - but presumably was something more fire resistant. It
was anchored to the existing wall with screw things and rendered so it looks
like pebble dash - looks quite neat.

And internal insulation will reduce the size of the rooms.

It is. Various methods depending a bit on the type of building and how
exposed the location is.
