A friend has asked me for help and I know there are people
in this NG with a good understanding of computer operating systems. Google doesn't bring up anything that is vaguely useful. He has a new laptop running Windoze 8.1, and an iPad. He uses an outlook.com account (formerly hotmail) for mail as he is very dissatisfied with the mail service provided by his ISP, BT. Can anyone advise me is there a mail client suitable for Windows 8.1 and the iPad (one package that will run on both or two different but easy to use packages) and be able to access outlook.com and sync mail between the two? When I say one package that will run on both I mean that has different versions for Windows and Apple OS but that possibly looks and/or (even) works the same - he is not the most advanced computer user. He uses the PC at home but takes his iPad with him when he goes away in his tin-shed-on-wheels (caravan.) He would like it that if he does any mailing whilst away it will be reflected (sent or receive) on his laptop when he next goes on line with his laptop when he gets home and vice versa. -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |

I could be wrong but I think all you need is software that will use IMAP to connect with your email service. The ipad will do this easily and I'm sure Windows 8 must have an email client capable of doing this. I *think* that with IMAP access, actions on any device (marking as read, deletion etc.) are mirrored back to the server and thence to any other device accessing the account. This could be ********. ;-) http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-con...outlook-yahoo/ Tim |

Yes, IMAP is the way to go, if the outlook.com servers support it. |

Or use Webmail so all the email stays on the server and the sync issue goes away...... The main drawback is no offline or intermittant connection modes. Stephen Hope Replace xyz with ntl to reply |

Sounds like he wants Imap. Not sure if Outlook/Hotmail allow this for free
though. Brian -- From the Sofa of Brian Gaff Reply address is active "Woody" wrote in message ... But do they actually use Imap or pop3. I was under the impression that the
Microsoft email system had problems with Imap. Also of course, one has to remember that webmail is the way most people seem to be using Outlook.com these days. Its slow and messy in my view.
