When I moved to my present house 35 years ago I brought an awful lot of
stuff. That was a warning, but I ignored it. This house is quite
big and for a while I was able to accommodate the ever-growing quantity
of 'stock'. Over a period of years I filled several rooms. We converted
to gas so the room that had housed the old boiler and two tons of coke
became free. I soon filled it with 'stock'. I then extended the (already
large) garage, and filled that with 'stock'.

Have you thought about asking the media museum (or whatever it's
called these days) at Bradford if they'd like some of it? I don't know
if they are just interested in the media or if they have an interest
in how it gets to to users as well.

I admire the completeness and honesty of your labelling system ;-)

I feel better now I've got that off my chest! Thanks for listening.

Its a cautionary tale for those of us that still aspire to ever bigger
sheds...

I have a boxed mint condition Pro Cassette deck ... and a 3,500 singles
collection .... think I have missed the boat for teh time to sell them on.

I think not. There seems to be a special section on eBay.

If you're lucky, and you have the right one, it might be worth a lot.

As it happens my daughter works there (sometimes; she's based at York
Railway Museum). I'll ask her. However...

I have a little Sony, it’s a Trinitron you see
My son came round on Thursday and he foisted it on me
It’s a lovely little telly and it has its own remote
But its analogue, not digital, and worth precisely nowt.

I’ll put it in the kitchen or the dining room perhaps
I’ll put it in the bedroom to wake me from my naps
I could put it in the office to distract me from my toil
But I’d have to buy a set top box to make it work at all.

I could use it as a footstool or perhaps a little table
Or a thing that might one day perhaps possibly enable
Me, or someone close to me, to make a bit of cash
(There’s lots of crazy Japanese who’ll surely make a dash

To get a bit of national pride, ignoring the details
Which are that this most lovely set was really made in Wales.)
Meanwhile it sits and blocks the way along my downstairs hall
I stub my toe; I curse and swear, I trip and sometimes fall.

The Media Museum said, “No thanks, we’ve got sixteen!”
I wondered about eBay but it isn’t worth a bean
The binmen wouldn’t take it: what is their rationale?
So as a desperate last resort I’ve lobbed it in t’canal!

So *that* was what made the bang when I sailed through that last bridge.

Ah yes done the same horded everything. About 5 years ago I knew I would
be moving house so started selling stuff on ebay, moved 3 years ago and
a load still came with me. ok so its over 5 years now but I have only
ever sold my `junk` as owned by me on ebay. Nothing has really been
remarkable but I have now sold in excess of £16k worth of junk. I still
the better stuff, a few old clocks and brass lamps & stuff which the
children are not interested in so they will eventually be sold on ebay.

This is the thing. You might think that that Austin Allegro headlamp is
junk - after all, when was the last time you saw one on the road? - but to
someone whose car just failed its MOT it's gold dust.

So it can work if you're prepared to play the long game. If you have time
to photograph and list all the bits, throw them up on ebay on long listings
at prices which are not extortionate but enough to cover your time and
hassle. You might only get an occasional bite, but if you can despatch
things without too much hassle you can just post things as they sell. If
you've got a steady trickle going out then it can make it worthwhile. But
it doesn't work if you're in a hurry.
