Quiz show on BBC 1. The contestant, a teacher, didn't know what colour
the live wire is in a 13A plug, yet remarked that he had taught kids how
to wire plugs. Then the rest of them were far from sure. Where do they
get these people?

Next question: How are they still alive and not dead from electrocution?

fools of themselves.

I've come across quite a few people who, when called on to do a job they
have no interest in, will diligently find out all they need to know, do
the job perfectly competently, then promptly forget everything they
found out in the process.

Cheers,

Colin.

I would assume it would be the same source they get their "Thirty
somethings" and uni students from that go to make up a lot of the
Eggheads challenge teams.

If ever proof were needed of the dire state of England's (UK's?)
education system, Eggheads provides a more than sufficient
demonstration of such almost every teatime, Monday to Friday most
weeks of the year.

The only upside for the younger, ill educated generation, is that
when the time comes for them to clear out _their_ lifetime's
accumulation of junk, it'll likely be much less in quantity due to the
more rapid obsolescence rate, with what's left being mere possessions
of very little nostalgiac value. Not for them, it would seem, will
they agonise over clearing out their sheds as Bill so eloquently
described just recently in the Slightly Off Topic "Don't hoard your
old stuff" thread.

I think the answer should be pretty obvious. Now that everything is
served up on a plate, they will have had no need whatsoever to rewire
a plugtop since everything electrical comes complete with its own lead
(detachable or not) with a moulded on plugtop.

In the rare event that the lead isn't long enough, they either buy a
13 amp extension lead or else replace the plug in lead with a longer
one.

Most modern electrical goods have too short a service life for a
mains cord to suffer damage from fair wear and tear. That just leaves
accidental damage to the plugtop itself which might justify the time
and trouble to replace it with a new one.

Even here, all 13A Plugtops that I've ever seen (even the ones
already attached) have a wiring guide attached to them so that even
the most ignorant have no excuse to get it wrong (as long as they're
literate enough to be able to follow a simple wiring guide).

I hardly ever know who I'm replying to. I'm easily confused.

The way threads are tabulated in news-readers, it can be very
difficult sometimes to see who you are replying to if there are many
intervening posts.

Perhaps there is a news-reader that handles this better than the ones
I have used.

Er, I had no such excuse. Bill's was the only post showing when I
started composing my reply. :-(
