I watched a bit of 'Family Guy' on BBC Three HD last night and noticed
it was 4:3. I checked BBC Three SD and it was widescreen. Is there any technical reason for this, I wonder, or was it just an error? |

Is there any technical reason for this, I wonder, or was it just an error? was 4:3 the right shape? - for older episodes it should be. i often find the hd channels show 4:3 correctly while the SD one won't unless you have chosen to set your tv to 4:3 mode. -- Gareth. I appreciate that, but how would that explain 16:9 on SD and 4:3 on HD at the same time when the same episode is being shown? |

Was there any geometric distortion on either version (hard to tell with Peter Griffin !) In other words was the 4:3 version a centre crop ? -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |

Both last night's episodes were very early ones, and would have been made in 4:3. I saw about a minute of one of them on the HD channel, and it was correctly displayed. I didn't look at the SD version. -- Richard |

I didn't look at the SD version. Well, I've never seen WSS signalling of 4:3 mode on HD channels, 4:3 progs I've seen seem to be presented with broadcaster added side bars. If you think about, all HD screens are 16:9, so there's no requirement for WSS on HD ? Perhaps on SD the Beeb forgot/failed to signal 4:3 mode, and the result would have been a stretched image, filling a 16:9 screen ? -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |

My Panny plasma recommends setting the sidebars to some mid grey rather than black for extended 4/3 viewing, which of course is not possible with broadcast pillar box. |

Next time I will be more observant! |

Indeed not, though 4:3 programming probably offers fewer burn in hazards than the bright captions and tickers that plague some channels ? -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |
