Default Suggested hard drives?

I have an old series 2 TiVo in my bedroom, and with my two WD 120gb drives in
it, it gets quite hot. 49C according to the system info screen. I'm
looking for some drives that run cooler.

Could you folks reply with the Brand name/Model number Size and how hot
your TiVo runs fro the System Info screen? I'm trying to put together a
list that I'll post somewhere on the web for anyone else who wants their
TiVo running cooler.

Brand: Western Digital
Model: WD120AB-00CBA1
URL (if available): http://www.wdc.com/en/products/produ...veID=29&lang=1
Size: 120gb
RPM: 5400
Number: 2
Temp: 49C

49C is well within normal range. That's not "quite hot." It's fine.

You might be able to trim a couple of degrees by making sure there's
sufficient air flow in and around the unit. Some people have added a
second fan, too.

I run between 49C and 52C (depends on how warm the room is) with two
120 GB Maxtor drives in each of two units. Before I upgraded, one of
my units (which then had just a single 40 GB drive) had a non-working
fan, yet the unit would function at temps up to 75C or so.

I'd concur.

My Series 2 60-hour originally ran at 37-39C with a single 60GB WD600AW
5400 RPM ATA100 HDD. I replaced that with a 120GB Maxtor L01J100 7200 RPM
ATA133 HDD; temps ran about 40-42C.

I then added an additional 120GB Maxtor L01P120 7200 RPM ATA133 HDD. Temps
now run about 47-50C.

I did enable the quiet mode on both drives with the amset utility.

According to Western Digital's data sheet for the OP's drive, operating
temps are 5 to 55C, so 49C is certainly well within normal range.

I'm curious: Did your TiVo's System Information page consider 75C to be out
of normal range? What did it say?

There are so many variables involved that I question the utility
of such a list. For example, besides what other people have
mentioned about adequate ventilation, ambient room temperature
plays a big role as well. Are you the type that keeps their entire
home at 72 degrees (or less) throughout a hot summer? Or are you
the type (like me) who sets their thermostat at 79? And the thermostat
is on the first floor, making the upper floor approach 85? Due to this,
I noticed a swing of at least 9 degrees as reported by TiVo.

IIRC, it said "High, Approaching Failure" but don't hold me to it. The
unit would shut down when it hit 73C or 74C. I got a small external
fan and let it blow across the top of the unit, which solved the
problem. I left this "temporary fix" in place for about a year.

When I did the HD upgrade, I found that the internal fan wasn't pulling
juice from the motherboard, although the fan itself was working fine.
I went to Rat Shack and got a replacement fan (what the hell) and an AC
adapter. I drilled a couple of extra holes into the fan frame, spliced
a suitable tap onto the lead from the fan, ran the lead through one of
the vent holes in the bottom of the unit, and plugged the tap into the
adapter. Works great.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
