We had some lashing rain last evening, here in Edinburgh, but by 5.15 this
morning the roads were dry as I drove round to the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
It is bright and slightly breezy now.

Newcastle- IJmuiden ferry Kings Seaway still hasn't managed to dock in
IJmuiden. Those on a day trip to Amsterdam must be overjoyed,
especially as the wind is veering and there will be a near head wind
for the return trip.

Liverpool; blue sky and sunshine with white fluffy clouds blowing past
in the breeze. After a quick blast of very heavy rain during the
night, nothing worse than a couple of light showers. Even a rainbow. I
think it will be safe to emerge from the bunker and take a stroll up
to Sainsbury's.

Around here is the highest place in Chessington, in Surrey. The Crystal
palace mast can b be seen from an upstairs window across the valley
inbetween on a clear day apparently.

Where is "round here", and what is the power and distance of the most
appropriate transmitter?

No the time it took to blow through here was far faster than 87. I suspect
its going to depend where one encounters the highest pressure gradient.

It's hardly been a repeat of Oct 1987 (here in Hampshire)

Yup, it seemed to get a pretty good hit here in West London, but as I said
previously, nowhere near as long lasting as 87 was, which is probably a good
thing!

However, I still think that many outside aerials are not fixed that well
around here, from what I'm told.

Nah then. The red smear on the telly weather forecast that represented the
areas of strong wind extended to here (very bottom of Yorkshire).

Ah yes, we need to spare a thought for those at sea in such weather. It is
most certainly not pleasant.
The worst I ever had in this way of things was back in the 80s, when a
freak storm was forecast in the Med, and all the locals said, Nah, never
happen so we got on a boat to Gozo from Malta. I'm sure I left most of my
stomach contents on that boat. I'm also sure it had a bloody flat bottom. To
add insult to injury, while we were on Gozo, the ferry hit the jetty on
Malta and we ended up coming back to half way around the island to get back.
enough said.

From a bit further north than that - near Belfast:
I've been watching the weather forecasts for the last few days waiting
for a suitable time to mow the long grass of the back lawn. This morning
was the time. There was very little rain overnight and there was a nice
breeze that had dried the grass a bit.

Indeed, I was annoyingly woken by a phone call at 07:30. I thought - that's
funny I can' hear anything outside, which was because it was calm (0 on the
Beaufort scale). It did start raining later (but this IS Manchester) and
now it is a bit blowy.

Still better a false alarm than what happened in 1987 - when I woke up
(staying near London at the time) to think "I don't remember them
forecasting that last night!" as I surveyed the damage and tried to drive
about five miles down the road, well any road...
