especially if you don't care about HMO (and I do not)
With this sort of attitude going around does Tivo need to promote HMO more, or just let it rest? Would adding a feature or two to HMO help, like plugging in an iPod? |

Would adding a feature or two to HMO help, like plugging in an iPod? I said that *I* didn't care about HMO, not that there aren't many who are not interested. I really don't know how well HMO is selling vs. their expectations, but I suspect pretty well. I don't care for it because it does things I don't need, such as listening to MP3s off my computer (because I don't like MP3s). Besides that, it allows viewing of JPGs and that's about it. Maybe a few more common graphic formats, not sure really. If you want to read about a home media function done right, search for the Xbox Media Player that many have installed on their hacked Xboxes. If TiVo HMO was like that, it might tempt me, even. |

However, now that I have a 2nd TiVo, it's more compelling. The problem now is that the new unit is DirecTiVo, so HMO isn't yet available for it. Once it becomes available, it's a no-brainer to add the service, to allow sharing programming between the two (which are a long distance apart). This'll take care of all the 3-way conflicts I run into in the busy part of the season, without requiring me to fall back to a VCR to watch programs recorded on the other unit. |

That was pretty much my impression, also. The only feature I wanted from HMO was remote scheduling, but $100 seemed excessive. After all, I could buy a refurbished S1 TiVo for less than that. The ability to stream MP3s and JPEGs sounded nice, but was not a deal-maker for me. Having only one S2 TiVo, sharing recorded content was of no concern to me. Besides, I already use an A/V phone line solution for sharing video between our two televisions. Then TiVo rolled out their free demonstration last month. Since I already had broadband, and could pick up a suitable USB/Ethernet dongle for $10, I signed up for the demo. I had been meaning to run ethernet cabling downstairs anyway.... "Psst--here you go. The first one's on me..." Remote scheduling spoiled me. Streaming JPEGs and music got a "hey that's kinda cool" from my wife, the shutterbug. Then the demo ended. No more remote scheduling. Withdrawal symptoms ensued.... Last Friday, I had to rebuild/babysit an ailing server at the office. I had forgotten to queue up several new shows airing that evening and next morning. The TiVo $59 HMO special offer was due to expire after the weekend. That clinched it. Now knowing how a crack addict feels, I signed up. I am due to check into rehab next week. g The long and short of it is, having become accustomed to HMO, it was rather hard to let go of it. Features that were unimportant to me did find uses; I've since converted my entire CD library to MP3. Having over seventy hours of music online is kinda cool, now that I think about it. it becomes available, it's a no-brainer to add the service, to allow sharing programming between the two (which are a long distance apart). This'll take care of all the 3-way conflicts I run into in the busy part of the season, without requiring me to fall back to a VCR to watch programs recorded on the other unit. Cooperative scheduling would be a much desired addition to the HMO suite, and might even prompt me to purchase another S2 TiVo. -- TiVo Series 2 60hr (upgraded to 310 hrs, 9 min) Philips Series 1 HDR212 (upgraded to 67 hrs + TurboNet) I watch too much TV, but no one cares except my wife. |
