I thought they were real, but maybe it was just a figment of my imagination. Talking of school teachers, do they still have the gung ho PE teachers who assume all children want to do and must be good at a sport. Brian I remember a bloke in my class doing a somersault over the wooden horse and shouting out in pain as he landed. The PE teacher told him to get up and not be such a wimp - when he couldn't the sod made him go and sit in the changing room until the end of the period. Half an hour later the bloke was carted off in an ambulance with a broken leg. Leith Academy? Wash your mouth out! I went to Broughton. I had the choice of Broughton, Leith Academy and Boroughmuir. I had the choice of the first two - I don't think Boroughmuir came into it. I picked Broughton because that's where my dad went. Did you have any of the same teachers? My first teacher at London Street had taught one of my aunts. Derek |

I lived in Annandale Street so Broughton would have been nearer but I had been at Leith Academy Primary so wanted to stay where my friends were. Wonder if I made the right choice? I was supposed to go to Herriots as the War was starting but my father envisaged air raids and me stuck on the other side of town so I initially went to London Street. Safer? I got knocked down by a van on the way home one day. You should post your reminiscences on he http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/ Fascinating site, full of trivia! I often look at that site. Derek |

... Smith is perhaps unique for having played for three Scottish League Championship teams without playing for Rangers or Celtic and playing in the European Cup for them all including two semi finals. A slightly later era, but Alan Gordon is the only man to play for Hearts, Hibs and both Dundee clubs. Get your Scottish football trivia here, folks. My high school that was built in the early 70s has already been demolished, though a new school was built next door. Not much more than 30 years useful life is pretty poor, especially as it was considered 'state of the art' when it opened.
