Default BBC Red Button HD via WinTV

Hi all,

I've got a Hauppauge Freesat DVB-S2 card, which I operate under WinTV.
Unfortunately, all of the channel numbers it generates in a scan seem
to be arbitrary Freesat channels, not the ones displayed on a standard
Freesat set (i.e. 303 for this channel). Does anyone know what channel
or method I can use to get this channel to work/record under either
Hauppauge's own WinTV or, failing that, in DVB Viewer?

Thanks in advance.

Why not just use Tv Catchup? It is only seconds behind live TV

No HD channels ? Not necessarily enough bandwidth available to OP ?

Possibly because one method is free over the air and the other could
cost the user money in Internet bandwidth charges, will be a lower
quality and may be capped/throttled as a result of a "Fair Use Policy".

The key words here are "HD" and "record".

I can already record the old red button channel(s) via my PVR, but
that's SD only. I just want the ability to record/keep and odd bits of
concert etc that're limited only to this channel.

I'm guessing that winTV is the TV recording viewing software that was
supplied with the adapter (like the DTVR app that was supplied with
the K-World/ Jetway DVB-T card I've been using since about 2006).

If WinTV is anything like DTVR, the channels aren't ever assigned
LCNs, just channel numbers generated on a 'first come first served'
basis as a result of the automated 'search' tuning process.

As a result of this, I keep a channel numbers 'cheat list' in a
notepad document to help me manually program recording schedules. The
following, by way of example, is a copy and paste from my current
FreeView list:

==============
BBC 1 33
BBC 2 34
BBC 3 36
BBC 4 37

Channel Four 16
Five 20
Dave 24

ITV 1 13
ITV 2 14
ITV 3 06
ITV 4 58
Film 4 59
==============

Basically, only the first five channels in the list have any
meaningful function. The rest, with the rare exception of Dave, are
merely noted for reference.

I've tried the more sophisticated 'Home Theatre' mediaplayer styled
software packages but given up on them since they seem to be written
by muppets incapable of 'real' programming who have relied upon that
crutch known as dotnet and, as a consequence, are glacially slow, are
extremely cumbersome to use and, being styled to emulate the horrific
TV set / remote control experience, extremely inaproppriate on a
desktop (or even laptop) computer blessed with keyboard and mouse
pointer device inputs.

Despite the lack of LCN labelling of the channels, I still prefer the
'crude' DTVR software over the the 'Home Theatre' offerings since it
is far less frustrating to use.

If the WinTV app is like the DTVR app, the lack of LCN labelling is a
minor shortcoming easily overcome with a desktop shortcut to a channel
list that you can open any time you need to refresh your memory when
programming the recording scheduler.

In short, it's usable (more so than the 'Home Theatre' apps in spite
of their 'advantage' of LCN labelling) and will get the job done once
you've gotten your head around the arbitary channel numbering it
creates.

It isn't something like your transponder list being out of date and
thus the software not searching in the right place is it ? Lyngsat
shows BBC Red Button HD on 11023 H 23000 2/3 along with BBC1 Scotland
HD and Wales HD; if the latter two don't show in a scan then that
might be the problem.

It's not that, it's not being listed as "BBC Red Button HD" deliberately
to FTA satellite boxes. BBC / Sky trying to hide it.

Excellent! It's been a while since I last had to do this (When C4 HD
first went live) so it didn't spring to mind. Basically, I had to add
the following line...

transponder frequency="11023000" symbol_rate="23000000"
polarization="H" fec_inner="2/3" broadcast_type="DVB-S2"
modulation="8PSK" pilot="-1" rolloff="35"/transponder

into this file...

C:\Users\Public\WinTV\satellites.xml

Hauppauge should provide updated files when new channels come online,
but they are notoriously slow about it i.e. you have to wait until
they can be bothered to issue a new version before you get the
changes.

Thanks again!

Try channel "name" 8900 which should be in the channel listings. There's
not much on that channel, mostly a REALLY annoying loop of what could be
on the channel, instead of actually showing something.
