I find Bill's anecdotes about his grandson entertaining. Thank you. It does seem that Ben has an unusual way of seeing the world. Incidentally, if you think he looks older than three in the picture it's because he is very big for his age. His dad is a giant. Ben is boisterous and riotous and naughty, and he reminds me of Richmal Crompton's William. Today Ben and his mum planted some seeds. Mum explained of course all about the fact that the seeds would grow into plants. Oddly, Ben latched onto this as a way of finding out about something that had been puzzling him. Did William (four month old brother) come from a seed? "I know he grew in your tummy, but why was he in your tummy?" I'll leave the rest of the conversation to your imagination. Today was a big day for Will. He got his first passport! He is one of those very cheerful babies, rarely making a fuss and easy to please. Oscar (4) can now ride his bike safely, without stabilisers. He was overheard telling his brother Jake Arlo (17 months) all about school, how you had to sit quietly sometimes and read your book but how there are lots of good things to do, how the teachers were firm but fair, how you get to bang a drum, how there is a monster in the bushes at the end of the school field. Oscar has a reading age of 8 or 9. He is a serious child, the opposite of cousin Ben. Katie (10) is now doing well at football. She is in the town's under 11 team. She reads and reads, novel after novel. She told me how she loves it when she gets immersed in a book. "It's as if I'm living two lives grandad. My life and the life in the book." Her brother James is known as Biff, and it suits him. He is three and he has the widest smile and the hardest punch of any child ever. Bill |
