Default some television purchasing questions

My Sony Trinitron television in my bedroom is dead. Needs a new tuner
and some other part, the cost was well over a hundred dollars and
since this TV is about ten years old, I figured I would be better off
just buying a new one.

The television I am considering getting is this:

Sony 27" WEGA Flat-Tube Stereo TV with 16:9 Enhanced Mode

Model: KV-27FS100

I know very little about televisions but I like the look of the flat
screen TVs and it sounds like a good set...

OTOH, I could get a 27 inch sharp for two hundred dollars less. Are
these WEGA TVs really worth the price? Should I consider a less
expensive 27 inch TV or even a (non-WEGA) 32 inch TV? Or should I
just get the old one fixed and wait until I can afford a HDTV? I am
not sure how much of a difference it will make, but I assume that a
10-year-old TV is going to be out-performed by any brand new TV.

Normally, I would recommend you buy quality. The gun construction in a WEGA
tube is far superior to anything else on the market, except for the
Mitsubishi tubes.

However, television is going through a period of extremely rapid change. The
landscape will change so much over the next few years, to the point of
unrecognizability.

The current front runner is the Intel reflective LCD chip, which is
predicted to lead to large screen HDTV rear projection sets only 7" thick,
at a very reasonable price point, as early as next Xmas.

Buy a disposable.

I will mainly use my TV to watch DVDs and play games (Sony Playstation
2, Gamecube, etc.) although I do watch some television as well,
especially sports. I would like to purchase a receiver and a decent
set of speakers in the near future as well, especially if I go for a
brand new TV. Do I need to take this into account in regards to which
new TV I go for?

Does normal use suffer any from the TV being designed to accomodate
16:9?

LCD are not ready for prime time.

Best picture out there for watching HDTV, OTA and cable is rear projection.
Well front is better but you need way more money and a darken room. CRT's are
still top dog even if the LCD's DLP's and LCD's are new and cool loking. I
looked real hard and found the Hitatchi Directors Series 65" monitor with the
Sony HD300 receiver that gets Direct TV, Cable and OTA signals without having
to switch inputs to be the best picture I could find presently.
