Has anyone else noticed that Outlook Express is randomly editing subject
lines making them new threads as far as some other readers are concerned?
I'm asking here as I'm told its happening here.

Looks to me that its those who use a colon after the OD that are affected by
this OE bug then.

What's "the OD"?

If an unusual character is included in the subject line, most newsreaders
will insert the character-set name at the beginning of the line,
delineated by questions marks. Outlook Express tries to handle this but
often fails and inserts rubbish characters into the subject line of
follow-ups. Now that Outlook Express has been superseded, its problems
will never be fixed.

Basically, I've just been on uk.test to prove this one. Any caps up to four
long followed by a : in the start of the subject line will be deleted when
Outlook Express does a group reply to a post, thus OD: OT: B BUMS: will get
edited off the subject line, instantly marking it as a new thread.
Bummer really as there seems to be no way to stop it doing this. The idea,
I imagine is to get rid of a huge number of at the start of a sub line.
What I see is that this does not make it a new thread and is obviously
catered for in the news format.

You can allow or disallow 8 bit chars in news posts according to the options
but I tried both with no discernable difference on the caps: issues.

I'd be more likely to lay the blame at Google groups than Outlook
Express, it often splits a thread into two, perhaps if someone changes
the subject line, but I think I've seen it do it for "no reason".

I tried a few test replies to your "codswallop" post, it didn't seem to
break it. maybe Google think they're being clever removing multi-lingual
prefixes for or Fwd:

Such as Ab: Rif: Sv:
