Anybody successfully used an RJ45 -wifi dongle to connect a PVR to the
internet? I have an RJ45 socket on my EchoStar but there is no inbuilt wifi which I could use to connect to my wifi modem/router. I don't really want any more cables trailing around the room. I could use a Homeplug, but was wondering about using something like this (there is a USB socket on the EchoStar I could use to power the dongle): http://www.all-batteries.co.uk/wifi-...x-xbox-ps3.htm (BTW, interesting to see the manufacturer's price he http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/rj45-wifi-dongle.html!!) Any other options? -- Jeff |

Any other options? -- I've used a DLink WiFi Access Point/Adapter (needs power). Not sure which of their current models would be appropriate but I remember having to reach the user guide to figure out which model could be switched from "I'm providing the WiFi" to "I'm connecting to the existing WiFi" mode. (BTW, interesting to see the manufacturer's price he http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/rj45-wifi-dongle.html!!) Interesting to see it correctly labelled too. It doesn't look like RJ45 at all to me. It looks like USB. Nothing wrong with that if it's what you need, but it would presumably need software drivers installed on whatever you plug it into, and if it's not a computer that might be difficult. A true RJ45 adaptor should work with anything that has a standard RJ45 (i.e. ethernet) port. Any other options? I have a Netgear WNCE2001 and an Edimax 7228 and both work well. Rod. -- |

Any other options? I use a TP-Link WR702n in 'client mode' with my Humax Foxsat . It can be powered from the Humax USB port. Less than £20 http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/d...TL-WR702N#over |

Any other options? I've got one of these http://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/...S-POINT-ROUTER which worked ok for a while, but then I had problems - almost due to the power of my router's WiFi reducing for some reason, so I cut my losses and went instead to a pair of cheap Powerline adapters from eBuyer, which work very well. The Tenda is a versatile device which has several modes of operation, and the instructions for setting it up are not too easy to follow - but it works well enough provided you have sufficient signal, and can be powered from a USB port. -- Cheers, Roger ____________ Please reply to Newsgroup. I now connect the PVR to the router via existing coaxial-cable infrastructure using a Gefen Ethernet-Over-Coax, which was perfect for my setup and gives flawless results (but now discontinued): http://www.amazon.com/GefenTV-Ethern.../dp/B0013LYMQ8 Richard. http://www.rtrussell.co.uk/ |

For about the same price as the dongle in your previous post I bought a TP one with 4 LAN ports. No problems re the USB port, probably better WiFi performance/range due to larger antenna(s), and as you acquire more smart devices (I have TV, STB and Bluray) you can connect them all to the Internet - simultaneously and at no extra cost. |
