My guess is that they have found an outfit that is prepared to buy any
unsold TVs and laptops from them at a fairly good price,

If they return high value / low margin goods to the distributer in
saleable condition the restocking fee would be better value than the
discount.

Retention of title by whoever sold them to Comet (e.g. HP & LG) - i.e. if
not sold and not paid for they remain the property of the supplier(s).

I am not following your logic here. Why would retention of title
apply only to TVs and laptops and not to other goods? Is it not the
case that Comet's finances have been precarious for some time now so
why would suppliers retain title on some goods and not others, or
alternatively some suppliers retain title and some not?

Interesting suggestions from you all, a really strange puzzle.
I myself not been in a Comet store since the first days of the
Administration when my impression was a few percent off and resulting price
was higher than Currys/PCWorld anyway, so I bought at PCWorld.

As regards my question do you think they might be short of TVs and Laptops
so move unsold ones to other open stores? Anyone been into a Comet to
note what stocks are like of goods. One of my fairly local ones is on the
closure list so will try to visit.

David

It would be very difficult to retain title on dumb goods, because once they
are in your house they are yours.

OTOH PC's, phones and Laptops contact their base once installed, so if Comet
or its administrators sell one that is not theirs HP or whoever can find it
and recover it.

It is also likely that these top end goods were more likely to be subject to
this policy.

Of course the worst ever was ITV Digital. I was at a cash and carry one day
and there was a display - ITV Digital box and a year's subscription £99. As
I was wheeling round my trolley, I noticed that the carton said the box
remained ITV's property and they could reclaim it if I did not renew after
10 months. I threw it on the floor.

Amusingly (well for me, but NOT the suckers that bought them) they went bust
and the administrators toyed with trying to get the boxes back until the
marketing suicide of this course became apparent - lots more in the archives
of uk.legal.

AIUI retention of title applies while the goods are in the hands of
the administrators. It does not apply after the customer has
purchased the goods from the shop.

OTOH PC's, phones and Laptops contact their base once installed, so if Comet
or its administrators sell one that is not theirs HP or whoever can find it

AIUI this would only apply if the goods were stolen property (ie, if
the administrators are acting illegally). I think you can discount
the idea of licensed insolvency practitioners acting illegally.

It is also likely that these top end goods were more likely to be subject to
this policy.

Why? Any supplier would want to retain title if they had concerns
about the finances of their customer

Totally different situation. These boxes were rented not sold.

Amusingly (well for me, but NOT the suckers that bought them) they went bust
and the administrators toyed with trying to get the boxes back until the
marketing suicide of this course became apparent - lots more in the archives
of uk.legal.

I don't think you understand the difference between purchase and
rental.

Do not believe the closure dates on the Comet website I was near one
yesterday that was on the closing list to close and was already closed.
I enquired at the next door store and was told fittings had already been
removed, do not know if correct or not but they thought only 26 stores are
still open.
Majority of Comet staff over the country had got work with Currys/PCWorld
until February others were already in new jobs at other places, so a bit of
good news even if short term.

David
