Getting new Tivo account

How long does it take to get a new Tivo account? I might need to buy a Tivo
unit this week and then start recording this Sunday.

Tivo works free the first week. That's more than enough time to sign up and
get an active account.

However, Tivo needs several hours (usually overnight) after you set it up and
it downloads its first guide data before it is fully functional. During that
time it is building indexes and sorting through two weeks of data.

Took about an hour or so to get set up and do the dialing in to get
whatever set up from Tivo. Mine went on an existing DirectTV setup,
so your times may vary. But by sunday shouldn't be a problem at all,
more of an "hours" thing than "days" in any case.

within minutes of setting it up. Whatever I could see on the guide.
Searches, wishlists and season passes didn't work until the next morning.
As nearly as I could tell, everything was working within 12 hours of setup.

I didn't try any manual recordings... that's not why I bought Tivo ;-)

I suspect the software estimates time based on what it took when the
software was written for a Tivo 1. The Tivo 2 has a faster CPU and twice
the RAM and does "housekeeping" much faster than the time estimates
presented on screen.

I was new to it at the time (obviously) so I guess I didn't know what to look
for until I'd played with it for a while. By then (day or two tops) everything
seemed to be in place. I remember being surprised that it was apparently fully
working so soon.
