I rarely watch ITV4, so this may be common, but it struck me as unusual.

Watching "Where Eagles Dare" tonight, every time they returned from the
adverts and 118 sponsor**** they showed the normal intro with the ITV4
logo and film title, then half a second or so of the film, then back to
the ITV4 logo and film title for a couple of seconds before returning to
the film at the original intro point.

Is that normal? If not, what was the likely problem?

Could it be for copyright reasons if someone tries to edit out the
adverts?

Well, incompetence in broadcasting is quite normal, so I suppose there
is no problem.

It's to make advert skipping on recordings more difficult.

Although a dirty great piece of "ITV2" DOG**** in the top left of the screen
makes it impractical for anyone to try to sell an off-air copy as a genuine
DVD of the film. Also, if I understand the OP correctly, none of the film
was lost because they repeated the brief excerpt as part of the programme.
It would be a few minutes' work to edit out the logo, sponsorship and
adverts (and also the spurious bit of film) using something like VideoRedo.
The DOG would be a problem though!

How does it make it more difficult? If you are going to edit out the
ads or skip them it seems just as simple to skip this as well.

Like most of these sort of things, if that's the intention, it doesn't
work and only irritates those who wouldn't be skipping ads.

On this occasion the film was shown in its original aspect ratio inside
the 16:9 widescreen TV format, so the DOG was entirely in the black bar
at the top of the screen. Simple to blank out if that was the
intention.

All commercial breaks irritate me so if I can't sip them I don't watch
the program at all. Half a second of the film followed by the logo is
difficult to skip with a button push or two! My skip time is four
minutes.
