Default VHF or UHF for HDTV

As I recall, VHF-low (channels 2-6) aren't very good for HDTV. But
channels 7-13 were OK.

When I bought my first HD set in 2006, analog channel 7 (Boston) was
broadcasting their digital signal on channel 42. When the country
went all-digital, channel 7 was going to shift their digital broadcast
to channel 7 and abandon channel 42. When the analog cutoff passed, I
had to re-scan so that the TV knew that digital 7 was on the old
analog 7. Then, three weeks later, the folks at channel 7 decided to
abandon real channel 7 and broadcast using channel 42. This caused my
TV a bit of confusion. For a day or so the PSIP of both broadcasts
were identical.

I realize it's been a few years, but why would channel 7 pick VHF-Hi
for their actual frequency, and then change their mind and switch to
UHF?

To the best of my knowledge, only two stations in the Boston/
Providence area actually broadcast on VHF today. The other 20+ only
use UHF.

Yep, we have a station in the Bay Area that opted to stay on
channel 7 after the switch and ended up having to put up another
transmitter in the South Bay (on a different channel) so folks
there could receive the station. The channel 7 signal just didn't
reach as far on digital.

Same here in Chicago. WLS (ABC) flash-cut to their previously analog RF7
(they had been using RF52, which was part of the sold-off frequencies)
but quickly ran into problems. They started also broadcasting on RF44. I
think they are supposed to eventually drop RF7, but are still using
both.
Probably waiting for a new antenna on Willis (Sears) Tower that was just
installed this past Sunday to be operational.

Otherwise, the only other main station on VHF is WBBM (CBS), which is on
RF12. Other than a low-power on RF4, nobody else is on VHF as far as I
remember.
