Default small unit for listening to internet radio

Was looking for a smallish portable internet radio, but they all seem fairly
big except the quest which is not getting very good reviews.

Then, Someone suggested using an internet radio on a smart phone.

I dont have a smart phone and hardly use my existing mobile phone at all on
the pay as you go tariff.

What would be a good second hand smart phone to buy and which app would be
best for internet radio? My computer is a desk top PC, what should i buy to
connect the phone to the pc, if that's necessary? Thanks for any advice.

I use TuneInPro on both an android tablet (Google Nexus 7, Android 4.1) and an android smartphone (cheap t-mobile vivacity, Android 2.3) to listen to internet radio. I can plug either into the aux in on my normal radio and stream internet radio via Wifi from my router.

Personally, I love my tablet - I would say that spending £159 on one of these will give you internet radio plus a whole lot more, without needing to be (or actually being) on a phone tariff (the Nexus 7 has no SIM card, it can only work via Wifi). Whether the "whole lot more" would be worth it for your use only you could judge.

Your specs for a phone, I would suggest, would be a minimum of Android Gingerbread (a.k.a. Android 2.3) on a device which has wifi and a 3.5mm headphone socket. Battery life will be "iffy", particularly second hand, so it would need plugging in quite a bit.

Why not just use your PC? Buy some remote speakers to have around the house somewhere where you want to listen to the radio and let your PC handle the internet radio? Obviously there are power consumption issues with using your PC like that, but that might not be a big problem.

Or geekier still, I'm sure a Raspberry Pi could fit the bill too?

An old Smart phone, no SIM on wi-fi should do the trick.

most N and E series Nokia's had wi-fi and older ones should be knocking
about cheap.

and which app would be best for internet radio?

Just go to their web page.

Or you could use a phone with Bluetook as headphones. You would need a
Bluetooth dongle for the PC - £2.50p from Aria last time I bought one. You
might not need a smart phone for this.

For that matter you could buy some Bluetooth head phones (~£10) and skip the
phone.

Thanks for any advice.

Just go to their web page.

That won't work for all internet radio streams I think due to potentially missing codecs / flash etc etc

Try
http://www.mikesradioworld.com/
for links to loads of streams, WMA, mp3 etc or
http://bbcstreams.com/
will get you WMA links for BBC stations. Yes, some are embedded in
Flash, so it gets hard.

If you have an Android phone, then the TuneIn Radio app will get you a
lot of stations. Probably similar for iPhone at a guess.

that's what i use - very useful.
when radio oxford put on football for example i can switch to radio
solent to get the show i'm missing.
it also makes recommendations based on your mp3 listening - it pointed
me in the direction of a gay radio station rather worryingly!

Which meaning of gay are you using? 1st, 2nd or 3rd?
