On tonight's main BBC1 News at 22:00 - the first from the Olympic Village
studio - Fiona Bruce's voice was nearly obliterated by background noise. Was
it last minute building work, a noisy aircon system or a helicopter hovering
over the studio. Or something else?

Any ideas?

The answer is to use the brand new 'Silentair' air con system. I run my office design and specification business the office above the inventor and his team here in Leeds and have been one of the first to specify it on my office fit out jobs. It does what it says on the tin.

Proper studios have had (near) silent air-con for decades. And not made by
'Silentair'

Correction - proper studios are scrapping the old huge outdated stuff for this new system which takes up a fraction of the space. But yes your right - silent air con was always achievable if you had a vast budget and lots of dead space for the huge baffle coffins. But that's old hat now and no use in 'pop up' studios or to my clients who want it in board rooms.

These & and numbers are getting me annoyed now. Whereas you can silence the
quote character to hear the quoted text now its completely impossible to
tell what the text says. Is this a new and improved google interface of some
sort?

Are they? Why would they scrap a perfectly good system?

I've no use for 'pop up' studios either. And if you'd actually heard the
racket, it's unlikely it was caused by the A/C. Just poor sound insulation.

You now agree there is a need for standards on newsgroups?

And then we go and put noisy projectors and computers in them.
One of our ex-presenters wanted a laser printer under the desk ("like we
have on News 24") for printing scripts. Let's just say the printer never
made it into the studio and she doesn't appear in either place any more.

It's a mystery to me why Google has made such a mess for their users.
What is the non standard quote format supposed to do?

Some people filter out all gmail and googlemail posts because of the
problem with quotes.

There already is one for quoting.

It makes the text HTML friendly. Which should be irrlevant as usenet isn't
HTML based and google shouldn't bother doing it.
