Is it just me or has the picture improved?

I think it might have done. I've just watched it for a couple of hours
and the picture seems to be reasonable.

Yes, I had noticed this too... ITV4 (SD) via Virgin cable.

The studio shots look almost crisp... and the cycling shots are much
less prone to pixellation.

I would guess we're seeing an good HD feed downsampled for SD
transmission, plus a bit more bandwidth.

Live was better than highlights but I /think/ they have both improved.

I watched about 30 min. this afternoon[1] and it didn't seem as bad - could
actually recognise the riders.
Three years ago I watched it on a then new Toshiba Regza 32" and the scenery
from the 'copters was brilliant. This year I was dreading the mountain
stages as a poor picture ruins the scenery for me.

Why oh why do we get a fine day when the TdF reaches the Alps?
Loads of mowing, trimming, cutting etc. to do in the gardens before the
growth gets totally out of control.

I was thinking that myself only yesterday evening. Anyone able to confirm
the extra bandwidth?

I was watching last night and thought things had improved.

Sent them a scathing email last week, as I'm sure did many others. Maybe
they took note? I'd like to think so . . .

Yes, the average bit-rate earlier this evening for the TdF highlights on
Freeview has been around 2.7 Mb/s, as compared to 1.7 Mb/s last week.

Umm, best we file that number away for next year. Perhaps remind them a
week or two before the start :-).
