ITV4 7pm Freeview:

How can they broadcast such an appalling picture? It's truly dreadful. I've
complained, but I know it won't make any difference.

Sorry - probably preaching to the converted!

You are - and it was just as bad last night as well. Maybe they
are wanting us to watch in HD?

Exactly!

They get a slice of the action from the B$kyB subscription as
far as I am aware.

So the answer to a better picture is to point your satellite dish at
Eutelsat 5A West at 5.0° West for France 2 (deux) on

transponder KB4 11,591 GHz Vertical
SR: 20000 FEC: 2/3
SID: 257
video PID: 120
audio PID: 130 francais

I've been watching a lot of cycling including the first days of the
TDF on Eurosport and Eurosport HD on VM. Pictures usually good but
problems can occur due to conditions on route. Bad weather, tree
overhang etc preventing a good signal from the motorcycle cameras
reaching the helicopters. Picture breaks up and the host broadcaster
usually switches to another shot or static camreas at the finish. Is
this the sort of problem you are getting on ITV4?

As the problem is the source, how would watching it in HD be any better?

It's artifacted (is that the correct way to form a verb from this noun?)

It's noticeable that it even affects the overlaid data so it's clear that it
is caused by compression during transmission rather than lost by the camera.

At times the picture was sub u-bend standard. I don't think the problem
is the source. The live pictures yesterday were much better than the
highlights I have just watched this evening. I would have compared today
live but I've just deleted the recording.

Probably -

a) because they know they'll only ever get miniscule
viewing figures regardles of picture quality -
the same goes for all the ITV freeview channels

b) because they know that a lot of the viewers they do get
will be grateful to get any sort of "live" coverage at
all - even with Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin
commentating who apparently aren't flavour of the
month with some people

c) they know that anyone who wanted to watch "live coverage"
that much, which has only been available on ITV4 for the past
year or two in any case, would already have forked out for
satellite or cable to watch via Eurosport or whatever.

d) Given which, they can be reasonably confident that anyone
who does watch on ITV4 will be more interested in the cycling
itself than in the picture quality.

* e) Or at least the vast majority of viewers anyway.
